The Panamera is the result of a long-held ambition by Porsche – to develop, in the brand’s own words, a ‘sports car for four’. The Panamera is a performance saloon, a dynamic model that delivers a powerful ride together with high levels of luxury and comfort.

The Porsche Panamera was launched in 2009 (the first generation was called 907) offering three trim levels – the Panamera S, 4S and Turbo. A hybrid, GTS and diesel engine version followed in 2011, with a further facelift to the range in 2013 (970).

The second generation (971) was introduced in 2016 before another range refresh in 2020 delivered updated features. Porsche discontinued the Panamera diesel – as it did with all its diesel models – in 2018.

The Porsche Panamera is a sports car in a super-sized version. For those who want to drive a high-performance Porsche without sacrificing practicality, the Panamera ticks a lot of boxes.

It’s quick enough to be loads of fun to drive, and spacious enough to be a comfortable family-ferrying vehicle. In that regard, the Panamera is achieving the mission statement Porsche set it – a sporty model that has four doors instead of two. Yes; family motoring just got a lot more exciting!

Available in a range of different engines, including petrol and plug-in hybrid – the diesel engine in the range was discontinued in 2018 – the Porsche Panamera sits between the Taycan and the Cayenne, in terms of size. It’s nimble and agile to drive, and fast, of course – the base model Panamera roars out 330PS, with 0-62 mph in 5.6 seconds and a top speed of 168 mph.

All used Porsche Panamera models are fitted with the superb PDK eight-speed automatic transmission, so whichever version you choose, you’ll accelerate swiftly and smoothly. The Panamera, S, Hybrid, and Diesel models are all rear-wheel drive, while the Panamera 4, 4S, and GTS each have the same four-wheel system, as the Turbo and Turbo S.Inside, the build quality, design and functionality is of a really high standard. Driver and passenger comfort has clearly been prioritised by Porsche, with air suspension helping any journey feel like a gentle cruise, even on rougher road surfaces. The driver’s seat and steering wheel can be adjusted electronically to make sure positioning is perfect, and personalised.

The infotainment system can be operated via a touchscreen, which is high-resolution and easy to use. In newer models, that touchscreen is 12.3 inches in size, while on older versions that’s likely to be the smaller 7 inch design. On used Porsche Panameras from 2017 onwards, wireless Apple CarPlay is included, with Android Auto available too.

The Panamera is roomy enough to accommodate four adults with a generous amount of head and leg room, while the boot space is an impressive 495 litres in petrol models (in the revamped second generation versions). This reduces to 403 litres in the hybrid models.

Standard safety systems include electronic stability control (ESC), while there’s a strong range of others that Porsche made available as options and may vary depending on which used model you view.

Potential buyers of a used Porsche Panamera will have the pick of a range of superb engines, including an e-hybrid model, and high – or even higher – performance Turbo and GTS versions.

There’s also body style to consider. The Panamera is available in two different and distinct versions. The Sports Saloon is the sleeker, hatchback/sportback style, while the Sport Turismo is an estate/shooting brake version. It has a distinctly square rear shape and a larger boot than the standard Panamera, at 520 litres.

The engine and trims available across both the Sports Saloon and Sport Turismo models are varied.

The latest line-up on the Porsche Panamera Sports Saloon includes the entry model Panamera, Panamera 4, Panamera GTS and Panamera 4 Platinum Edition. The plug-in hybrid models are the Panamera 4 E-Hybrid, Panamera 4 E-Hybrid Platinum Edition, Panamera 4S E-Hybrid Platinum Edition, and Panamera 4S E-Hybrid. This is the most powerful of that selection, with 560PS, 0-62mph acceleration in 3.7 seconds and a top speed of 185mph.

Want more power and pace still? Then take a look at the Turbo versions. The Panamera Turbo S can deliver 630PS, with a top speed of 196mph and 0-62mph acceleration in 3.1 seconds. The Turbo S E-Hybrid’s figures are 700PS, and 0-62mph in 3.2 seconds, with the same top speed.

The Panamera Sport Turismo has comparatively fewer engine choices but is also available as a Turbo S Sport and Turbo S E-Hybrid Sport, so performance is matched. The 4 E-Hybrid Sport Turismo, 4 E-Hybrid Sport Turismo Platinum Edition, 4S E-Hybrid Sport Turismo and GTS Sport Turismo are other trims available.

The E-Hybrid models combine a petrol engine with an electric motor. Driving in all-electric mode, top speed is 87mph with a respectable range of between 30 to 35 miles, according to official Porsche statistics.

When you’re looking at used Porsche Panamera models for sale, take some time to check through the full spec and features of the car. Porsche has a lengthy list of options for the Panamera, and if you’re choosing between certain used models you might find greater value in a car that’s more heavily equipped.

Look out for additional features such as rear-wheel steering and carbon-ceramic brakes – these are standard on Turbo S models so will be included if you’re buying one of those. Some used models might also have extra safety features, like lane-change assistant, night vision, adaptive cruise control, and lane departure warning.
