The Porsche Cayenne is a sensational SUV with sports car quality. The third model series from Porsche – following the Boxster and the 911 – it offered something completely different for lovers of the brand. So much so, that the Cayenne has become a global best seller for Porsche.

Porsche launched the Cayenne in 2002, with the first generation (E1) succeeded by the second (E2) and the third (E3) arriving in 2017. The model line-up was refreshed in 2023 and now includes three versions – the Cayenne, Cayenne E-Hybrid and Cayenne S. There’s also a Cayenne Coupé, which has an E-Hybrid and S trim, too.

The Cayenne was a huge deal for Porsche when it was unveiled. An SUV from the manufacturer famed for crafting sleek, agile sports cars? It may have seemed a strange alliance at the time, but the Cayenne has been a phenomenal success for Porsche and remains arguably the leading premium sports SUV in the world.

It’s no longer the only SUV in the Porsche family; the smaller Porsche Macan is positioned below the Cayenne, so if a more compact version suits you better, there’s another excellent alternative.

The Cayenne is a joy to drive – Porsche has got it just right. Handling, minimal body roll, ride comfort, power, acceleration; for a five-seater SUV, a used Porsche Cayenne actually does drive very much like a sports car. The base model is fitted with a 3.0 litre V6 petrol engine that pushes out 348hp, clocking 0-62mph in 6.0 seconds. And that’s the base model.

All used Porsche Cayenne models have eight-speed automatic transmission, which makes the drive experience super-smooth. The Cayenne is an effortless motorway cruiser, perfectly equipped for daily urban driving and happy to mix it off-road, too, should you traverse challenging terrain. As part of its latest model updates and upgrades in 2023 on the E3 model, Porsche made its Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) system standard across the range.

The interior has a sporty design, with luxury elements. The steering wheel position can be configured in a number of positions, while the driver’s seat is eight-way electrically adjustable as standard; 14-way and 18-way are available as options, so some used Porsche Cayenne models may have this included.

In-cabin infotainment is delivered via a touchscreen, which works with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The size of the touchscreen depends on the year of the model. From 2020 onwards, cars were fitted with a 12.3-inch touchscreen. From 2017 to 2019, models had a 12-inch screen, while 2016 and older used Cayennes had a 7-inch screen.

A 10-speaker stereo comes as standard, but you may see a used model with either of the optional Bose or Burmester systems.

Safety systems included as standard are lane keep assist, automatic emergency braking and traffic sign recognition.

Storage isn’t compromised at all. The Cayenne has a boot that provides 698 litres of capacity; fold the rear seats down, and that increases to just over 1,700 litres.

The Porsche Cayenne is available in three different model variants – including a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV). There’s also an alternative body style to consider. In addition to the classic used Porsche Cayenne SUV, the model is available as a coupé.

Newer used Cayenne and Cayenne S models have petrol engines, while the PHEV model is the Cayenne E-Hybrid. Porsche did produce a diesel Cayenne from 2010 to 2018, so it’s still possible to find used diesel versions available, if you prefer.

The Cayenne is the base or entry level model. It has a 3.0-litre V6 turbo engine that kicks out 348hp and an impressive 0-62mph time of 6.0 seconds. Top speed is 154mph.

The Cayenne S has a V8 engine that boosts performance to 468hp, with 0-62mph acceleration of 4.7 seconds and a top speed of 170mph. Of course, it’s priced higher than the base model Cayenne but if you want that faster performance, you’ll find it in the V8.

Price wise, the Cayenne E-Hybrid sits between the two models. It partners a V6 petrol engine with an electric motor, and it’s quicker, and more dynamic, than the basic Cayenne. Power output is 470 PS (the equivalent to approximately 463 hp), with 0-62mph of 4.9 seconds and a top speed of 158mph.

That’s with the engine engaged; in all-electric driving mode, the max you’ll reach is 84mph. Driving range on pure electric power is up to 56 miles.

The Cayenne E-Hybrid has superior fuel economy, with an mpg range of between 156.9 and 188.3, compared to the Cayenne’s 23.3-26.2, and the Cayenne S, which has 21.2-22.8 mpg. There is a compromise to be made on storage though, as used Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid models have 150 litres less boot space due to the size and position of the battery pack.

Then, there is the Cayenne Coupé, which has a sportier exterior due to the low roofline and sloped rear design. It’s also available in the three same trim levels – Cayenne Coupé, Cayenne E-Hybrid Coupé and Cayenne S.

Top of the Coupé range is the Turbo version, which has a 4.0-litre V8 engine and delivers 550hp, with 0-62mph in 3.9 seconds.

Some used Porsche Cayenne models will come with the Sports Chrono Package, which adds performance-enhancing features such as Launch Control, SPORT Response and Driver-Selectable Driving Modes.
