About the Porsche 911

Approved Used Porsche 911 Image 1

Launched in 1963 and celebrating its 60th birthday in 2023, the 911 is not only a truly iconic sports car; it’s one of Porsche’s most famous models.

Originally called the 901, Porsche later changed the name of its flagship sports car to the 911. There have been eight different generations of the 911, but despite new models, new innovations and new designs, tradition has endured. The 911 has always had a rear engine, and always had a 2+2 seating layout. And every Porsche 911 is crafted in Zuffenhausen, Germany. Evolution not revolution; there’s no need to fiddle with perfection.

Online and in stock across our four Porsche Centre Network dealerships in Bristol, Cardiff, Swindon and Tewkesbury, you’ll discover a fine range of approved used Porsche 911 models for sale. We also sell classic Porsche 911 cars too.

Why buy a used Porsche 911?

The Porsche 911 is a work of engineering genius. It’s one of the most coveted sports cars in the world – rapidly quick, with superior cornering and handling ability – but also built for everyday driving. Porsche has built the 911 for comfort and ease of use; it’s much more than an indulgent, weekend-away only car.

That said, of course the main focus is on performance. The 911 thrives in all types of road conditions, from motorway cruising, to urban driving and navigating twisty, country roads thanks to its exceptional grip.

If your used Porsche 911 already has adaptive cruise control fitted, you can set the system to manage acceleration and braking for you. All 911s from the latest generation of models (992) have adaptive suspension as standard – and might be included as an option on older used cars – so you can ensure ride comfort at all times.

All Porsche 911s have petrol engines, and power varies across the model range. Obviously, there’s no slow or even slow-ish option, with an entry level used Porsche 911 from the latest generation (992) capable of 385 PS, 0-62mph in just 4.2 seconds, and a top speed of 182mph.

On the practical side, the 911 is comfortable, as front seats can be configured in a number of different positions thanks to the electric adjustment system and adaptive sports seats. Some used 911s will have 14 or even 18-way adjustable seats, with driver memory function. Leather upholstery is standard, so there’s a high-quality feel.

In a sports car of this size, it’s no surprise that the two rear seats are best reserved for smaller passengers such as kids, rather than adults. Still, many other rival sports cars don’t have rear seats at all, so the 911 has an advantage here. Because the Porsche 911 has a rear engine, the boot is at the front of the car, and offers 132 litres of capacity.

*Key features of a used Porsche 911 could include:

  • Rear view camera
  • Cruise control
  • Front and rear parking sensors

  • Adaptive sports seats
  • Lane Change Assist

  • LED headlights

  • PDK transmission
  • Electric slide/tilt glass sunroof

The cabin carries hints of 911 retro styling and hosts a good range of hi-tech equipment; some models have three infotainment screens but all used Porsche 911s from 2019 onwards have a 10.9-inch touchscreen as standard (2018 models and older come with a 7-inch screen). Apple CarPlay (on 2018 models onwards), Android Auto and sat nav are all part of the package, as is an eight-speaker stereo.

Standard safety kit on a used Porsche 911 includes automatic emergency braking (AEB) and electronic stability control (ESC) that works to maintain grip, even in wet and challenging conditions. With other systems available as options, check the spec on every available used Porsche 911 for sale to see what’s included.

Tips and advice for buying a used Porsche 911

The Porsche 911 is a real success story in the world of motoring, established over several decades. Because of this longevity, there are a large range of different models available. The 911 is in its eighth generation, after all.

So – when looking for used Porsche 911 models, bear this in mind. Unless you’re looking for a classic 911, it’s likely that the generations you’ll be looking at will be those titled 996 (1997-2005), 997 (2004-2012), 991 (2011-2019) or the latest version, the 992 (2018 to present). The 996 generation represents a significant development for the Porsche 911, as it was the first model range to switch to water cooled engines from the previous air cooled design.

Prices typically vary across models from these generations, so budget is a key factor in any buying decision, as well as the type of used Porsche 911 you want. There’s potentially a huge choice, depending on availability.

The Carrera is the base model, which is also available as a Carrera T and Carrera S. There’s a Carrera Cabriolet (and a Carrera S Cabriolet), too, giving buyers the option of an open top. In addition to these, the Carrera is available as a four-wheel drive version, with a Carrera 4 and Carrera 4S. Both are available in Cabriolet versions.

It doesn’t stop there. Other used Porsche 911 model variants include the Targa – the semi-convertible body style – the GTS trim, and the Turbo versions. The Turbo S, which has a Cabriolet version, can reach a scorching 0-62mph acceleration of 2.7 seconds and a top speed of 205mph if fitted with PDK automatic transmission and the Sport Chrono Package. Its 3.7-litre engine delivers 650hp. The GT2 RS is faster still, with a top speed of 211mph.

The PDK transmission is an eight-speed automatic, though some used Porsche 911 models have a seven-speed manual gearbox instead.

Porsche offers a lot of options and extra packages on the 911 range, so it’s worth checking to see what might be included on any used models you’re considering.

You’ll inevitably see a higher price tag on a used Porsche 911 with options included versus a model that either has none or fewer, but you might consider it better value to have features such as Remote ParkAssist, adaptive cruise control and a Bose or Burmester sound system available.
