The Porsche Boxster is a two-door, two-seater sports car that’s part of the 718 line-up, alongside the similar Porsche Cayman. Offering a choice of powerful engines, the Boxster is a stylish and dynamic model – a premium roadster built for open-air driving.

Launched in 1996, the Boxster has long been a part of the Porsche family. Its first generation was titled 986, with the second generation 987 running from 2004 to 2008. After a series of updates, the third generation (981) was introduced in 2012 and then Porsche revealed a major change in 2016. The Boxster became known as the 718 Boxster, and moved from a six-cylinder engine to a four-cylinder model.

If you want a two-seater roadster sports car, a used Porsche 718 Boxster is one of the finest examples available in the UK market. It shares many of the qualities of its 718 sibling, the Porsche Cayman, which is a coupé.

In contrast, the 718 Boxster is an open-top car – a model known as a convertible, cabriolet, or roadster. It drives just like the Cayman, which is great news. Sharp handling, punchy acceleration and powerful engines make the Boxster a joy to drive, whether it’s cruising smoothly on the motorway, carving through a series of bends on a twisty country road, or nimbly negotiating its way around town.

Performance is superb and varies depending on the exact type of used Porsche 718 Boxster you own, but the base model sets the tone. Fitted with a 2.0-litre petrol engine, it delivers 300hp and clocks 0-62mph in just 5.1 seconds, with a top speed of 170mph. There are faster versions available, as we’ll cover in the buying tips section, but this is quick enough for many buyers.

Interior comfort is enhanced by the many adjustable settings on the two seats, so that driver and passenger can position themselves perfectly. Over and above the standard function, some used Boxsters may come with 14 or even 18-way electrically adjustable seats. Head and leg room in the front is spacious, considering the Boxster is a two-door sports car.

Boot capacity is 272 litres, divided over two compartments. Because the Boxster is a mid-engine model, it has two boots – the front offers 150 litres of space, and the rear 122 litres.

The roof is refreshingly easy to operate. It can be lowered or raised in just a few seconds at the touch of a button, and even during driving too, below a certain speed. So, if the weather suddenly turns for the better while you’re driving, you can lower the roof without having to stop the car and interrupt your journey.

Following its most recent update, the infotainment system in newer used Porsche 718 Boxster models is much improved. The 7-inch touchscreen comes with built-in sat nav, Bluetooth, DAB radio, and Apple CarPlay, which became standard on all models from 2017 onwards.

A six-speaker sound system comes as standard, but some used Porsche Boxsters may have either of the optional systems already fitted – Bose or Burmester.

So – you’ve decided to buy a used Porsche 718 Boxster? Smart choice. Now you’ve set your sights on this fantastic two-seater roadster, your next decision is this – which type of Boxster ticks your buying boxes?

Deciding this often comes down to budget, but also what you’re looking for from the car. Porsche offers the Boxster in a range of different trims, engines and specs, so, as with all models, there’s a gap between the entry level car and the top of the range.

If you want more power and a larger selection of features, move upwards through the range – though the base model is brilliantly equipped and provides the genuine Porsche experience.

In addition to the standard Boxster, there’s also the Boxster T, Boxster S, and Boxster GTS 4.0. The Boxster T stands for Touring, and it has the same performance levels as the entry-level model. What marks it out as different is that it has performance options added, including larger (20 inch compared to the standard 18 inch) alloy wheels and heated side mirrors. The Boxster T also comes with a shortened gear lever. This helps to speed up shifts, providing maximum power.

Sporty bucket seats are available as an option on the Boxster T, so a used model may have them already fitted, but they’re not available at all on the entry level Boxster.

The Boxster S steps up performance levels to 0-62mph in 4.6 seconds, courtesy of its 2.5-litre engine that delivers 350hp. Its standard alloys are 19 inches, but with options including 20-inch Carrerra S and 911 Turbo wheels, some used models may have these upgrades fitted.

Top of the range is the Boxster GTS, powered by a thumping six-cylinder 4.0-litre engine that hammers out 400hp and hits a 0-62mph time of 4.5 seconds. Top speed is 182mph, faster than the Boxster S, which can reach 177mph.

The Boxster is available with either a six-speed manual gearbox or the formidable seven-speed PDK automatic transmission. And, with an extensive selection of options available, check the spec on any used Porsche Boxster you view or take it for a test drive, as these can have an impact on performance, comfort, and enjoyment.

One of the key options is the Sport Chrono Package (which is standard on GTS models). This provides a series of driving modes – Normal, SPORT, SPORT PLUS and Individual, and can be controlled from the steering wheel.
