International Women’s Day is coming up, and we have a special story to tell in light of this important day. At Porsche Centre Cardiff, we are pleased to support work experience programmes around our business. We have had young people join us for work experience in Sales, Service, Parts and in the workshop.

Recently Cerin, who is completing her final years of Sixth Form before she heads off to university to study Automotive Engineering, joined us in our workshop. We have touched base with her to see what it was like to get up close to the world of Porsche and experience what it is like to be a Technician in a busy workshop.

Name: Cerin Joy
Education Level: A Levels
Favourite Porsche: Cayman GT4
Dream job: Automotive Designer

What has it been like working in the workshop for a week?

It has been exciting. There is a nice atmosphere in Porsche Cardiff, everyone is friendly, very inclusive and have taken the time to look after me. This week was the first time I had ever even sat in a luxury car and I have loved learning about the background knowledge of the cars and the brand.

Why did you want to do work experience at Porsche Centre Cardiff?

I wanted to work with a luxury brand of sports cars and I live in Haverfordwest so this is the closest Porsche Centre. Because the Porsche brand is more specialist, I felt like I would get better experience of working with supercars and what it is really like day to day.

What made you want to do work experience in the workshop?

I knew I would get hands on experience coming in to a smaller workshop. It has been good practice for the course I am planning to do at university and I feel like I know a bit more about what I am getting into when I start my degree in Automotive Engineering.

What has your work experience taught you about working with cars?

I got a good overview of all the different systems and was surprised that lots of the work involved IT and electrical systems. It has been great to get a broader understanding of what makes the Porsche brand what it is and some background knowledge of the cars and engines.

What has been the highlight of the week?

Definitely going out on road tests to see what the difference in the cars was after we had changed things. I also really enjoyed helping the Technicians, I assisted Tom in changing spark plugs, fixing a blower motor…there was a real mixture. Tom and Craig were talking me through everything, so even if I couldn’t do it myself everything was explained really clearly and no one was ever patronising when they explained to me.

What are your plans for the future?

I am going to University to do degree in Automotive Engineering, then I plan to complete my Masters. Ultimately I want to end up working in Automotive Design. I would like to be an Engineer and focus on design and manufacturing, and after this week I would like to for a specialist brand.

Alongside Porsche, Dick Lovett also works with respected brands such as Jaguar, Aston Martin, MINI, BMW and Land Rover. We aim to provide work experience to young people who are passionate about learning and dedicated to their own personal growth.
