A ROLL cage and non-adjustable bucket seats probably don’t feature too highly on most people’s list of must-haves for a long car journey across Europe - unless you’re lucky enough to be driving a Porsche 911 GT3 3.8 Clubsport that is.
Porsche Centre Tewkesbury customer Gary Spencer fulfilled a long-held dream to attend the world-renowned Geneva Motor Show this month and rather than fly out, he decided to travel in style in his beloved Porsche 911 GT3.
I use my car every day, I go to work in it, I park in multi-storey car parks, I go to the supermarket in it, so when Porsche Centre Tewkesbury offered me the chance to go to the Geneva Motor Show I thought, ‘let’s do this properly!’ Gary said.
He was joined for the epic road trip by Porsche Centre Tewkesbury’s Sales Executive James Booth and even kitted the car out in special livery, taking inspiration from the first Porsche to win Le Mans - the Team Salzburg 917 Le Mans car from 1970.

“My GT3 is finished in Guards Red anyway so it seemed the perfect choice,” said Gary, “and the reception from people when they’ve seen it has been amazing - we had thumbs-up all the way to Geneva and one person even asked me for my autograph!”
But 12 hours in a Porsche 911 GT3 may have seemed like a bit of a big ask. To many people it’s effectively a road legal race car. To Gary it’s simply perfection on wheels.
“The car was brilliant. It’s perfect - no, the seats don’t adjust but you don’t need to adjust them because they are already in the perfect position.
“It’s always super reliable and I use it as my everyday car - maybe I was a little worried about the comfort, but I needn’t have been as it was absolutely brilliant and the ride quality was superb,” Gary said.
Gary, who previously owned a Porsche Cayman GT4, has had his Porsche 911 GT3 since July last year and has already done 5,500 miles in it: “It’s a car that needs to be driven.
“As well as using it every day I also do track days in it and I meet up regularly with other Porsche owners as a member of the Porsche Club GB,” said Gary.
He added: “It’s always been Porsche 911sfor me - just the sound of the engine is enough to put a smile on my face. It’s the six cylinders that give it its personality, it really is perfect and is everything I ever wanted it to be.”
Such is his love of the GT3 he is already planning ahead and has set his sights on a new Porsche 911 992 GT3 - and possibly another road trip, this time to Stuttgart.
“The build quality of Porsche is amazing and Porsche Centre Tewkesbury has been over and above everything I could ever have expected them to be.
“I thought it might have been a little bit snobby but it’s the complete opposite and everyone there feels like family. I just pop in to seem them for a catch-up, they’ve become friends,” Gary said.
So the highlight of the trip to Geneva? The long, long tunnels through the mountains: “The sound of the engine echoing was absolutely brilliant . . . although watching James having to hang right out of the car to reach the tickets at the toll booths was brilliant as well!”
