About the 924.

Introduced in November 1975, the Porsche 924 was the first production Porsche with a water-cooled front engine. The front-engine, rear wheel drive arrangement was common for many other sports car manufacturers of the period but was unusual for Porsche having previously only used mid- or rear-mounted boxer engines, all of which had been air-cooled.

The all-new sport 2+2 coupé was a design commission undertaken by Porsche for VW/Audi that was then abandoned and sold back to Porsche late in development, with Audi agreeing to build the car at its Neckarsulm plant.

Fine-tuned suspension and a rear transaxle with near perfect weight distribution made the car handle exceptionally well. Throughout its life the 924 evolved with models such as the 924S, Turbo and rarest of all the Carrera GTR, of which just 17 examples were produced.

The 924 was a huge sales success for Porsche, with over 150,000 examples being sold around the world during its 11-year production run. The 924 is often regarded as the car that saved Porsche from financial ruin.

Porsche enthusiasts have always known that the 924 was a useable, fine-handling, practical sports car, but recently as that has become more commonly understood, values of the best examples have been on the rise.

Our 924, the best available on the market today?

A bold statement, but one that Porsche Centre Bristol are confident of, having recently completed a comprehensive bare metal, ground up restoration of this particular example. This 1982 car has been expertly restored by Porsche Centre Bristol, in conjunction with Dick Lovett Spraymaster - our Porsche Approved Repairer.

No expense was spared in the restoration of this Porsche 924, which was completed as part of Porsche Cars Great Britain’s celebration of 40 years of front-engine transaxle cars.

The Restoration.

Being a six-owner vehicle with just 72,000 miles and a fantastic history folder, the car proved to be a perfect base for the restoration. Upon arrival to the Centre our Classic Restoration team performed an initial health check and body inspection. The decision was then made to completely strip the car and send it to Dick Lovett Spraymaster to begin the restoration.

Once at Dick Lovett Spraymaster, the team then examined the underside for corrosion in the chassis and inner sills. They realigned the door fitting as the driver’s door has dropped slightly. Following a thorough examination for rust around the car and making the subsequent repairs, they stripped the paint back to metal, checked and repaired all under seal, removed the poor surfaces and resealed to original factory condition.

Spraymaster then applied a colour coat over the under seal as required in preparation for a full re-paint and body rebuild (including replacing both front wings due to excessive corrosion/damage).

Whilst the 924 was at Spraymaster, Porsche Centre Bristol set about stripping the engine. For a car that is over thirty years old, the engine was in remarkable condition. The entire engine was cleaned and ‘vapour blasted’ as well as having the block powder coated, giving the engine a ‘as good as new’ look. Re-building the engine was more of a challenge for the team due to engine gaskets not being available, so to overcome this problem a roll of gasket paper was bought and a handful of ball bearings were used to mark it before the holes were cut, something our technicians haven’t done in over 20 years!

New suspension was fitted, with new wheel bearings in all corners, all brakes were replaced and the front brake calipers were sent to a specialist for a total strip, rebuild and powder coating. Period correct new tyres were fitted courtesy of Pirelli.

To compliment the engine and body rebuild, the interior was refurbished to a remarkably high standard, with the added bonus of a Porsche Classic Navigation System. The dash was sent away for specialist repair to correct the usual cracks that appear in the fascia top with age.

To conclude.

An extremely rare opportunity to invest in a totally restored 924 in a desirable colour combination and impressive service history. Values of transaxle Porsches are rising as collectors take note of these highly capable and often undervalued models. Our example is arguably the best available on the market today and would make any enthusiast or collector very happy indeed.
