Did you know that while the GT3 appellation was added as a nod to the GT class where the motorsport versions of the model would compete, the Porsche 911 GT3 had already broken racetrack records before its launch in Geneva. Walter Röhrl had driven it along the 20.8 kilometre Nürburgring Nordschleife in a time of less than eight minutes, setting a new standard for on-road sports cars.
Here, Rob Weale, a customer at our Dick Lovett Porsche Centre in Tewkesbury, tells us about his love affair with the Porsche 911 GT3.
What do you love most about your GT3?
I love absolutely everything about it – but if I had to pick one feature it's the rear spoiler … only Porsche can get away with a spoiler that big!
What made you choose the GT3?
Even as a child I dreamed of owning a 911. It was always the extreme road racer look that excited me – an early 911 Turbo springs to mind. Fast forward 40 years and to me the GT3 RS is exactly that: a extreme road racer that excites me every time I look at her. She just creates such an event when I drive her. She's a boyhood dream fulfilled for sure.
Have you ever taken your GT3 on a track day?
Recently I was lucky enough to be invited by Dick Lovett's Porsche Centre in Tewkesbury to drive my GT3 RS up the famous Prescott Hill Climb. My wonderful car made this average driver look pretty competent.
What other Porsches have you owned?
I’ve been lucky enough to have a 911 of one description or another in my garage for the last 20 years, this being my 6th. I have owned a 1983 911SC, a 1989 Carrera Sport, a 1999 996 Carrera 4, a 2004 996 Turbo and a 997 Turbo Cabriolet. I have also owned a 928 S4 and a Cayenne S.
Where is the best place you have ever taken your GT3?
I haven’t owned the car very long but without a doubt the best place I have ever taken my GT3 RS is … home!
What are your future plans for your GT3?
I'm looking forward to taking the car to our holiday home in southern Portugal. The roads in northern Spain and central Portugal are just fantastic and I know this car will make them all the more enjoyable.
Which three words would you use to describe the GT3?
Only one word required: perfection!!
Has anything about the GT3 surprised you?
I knew the car was good, but nothing quite prepares you for how good. This is a driver’s car and when you drive her she just keeps giving and giving. I consider myself very lucky to own her, and that is probably the biggest surprise of all.
