Meet Ollie! Along with everyone here at Porsche Centre Swindon, he’s counting down the days to the 2018 Great Britain Porsche Classic Restoracing Competition.
One of our dedicated Porsche technicians, the 24-year-old will take to the wheel of a 986 Boxster and represent Porsche Centre Swindon at the multi-day event. We’ll be competing with Porsche Centres from across the UK to race this classic model at some of Britain’s most famous circuits.
The event was created by Porsche to mark the 20th anniversary of its first-generation Boxster (the 986) that took the open-top sports car market by storm in 1996.
With Porsche introducing a more affordable mid-engined two-seater sports car, the brand reached a whole new generation of owners, and the Boxster through its updates remains a fantastic entry into Porsche ownership.
This year’s competition will see Porsche Centres from across the country not only source and restore 986 Boxster S models, but also nominate a driver to compete in three-rounds of racing at two iconic tracks; Brands Hatch and Silverstone.
Cars will be judged on a wide range of criteria including mechanical renovation, body and paintwork and, of course, their performance on the race track. The model’s paintwork is a particular focus as each car must feature bespoke livery inspired by motor racing history.
Our Swindon based Porsche experts have been working hard for several months to transform a carefully sourced 986 model into a rip-roaring race machine, complete with roll-cage.
Stephen Brown, Classic Manager at the Centre and fully paid-up Porsche aficionado (and proud owner of a ‘79 model 911 himself) has been instrumental in the project. It helps that our sister site Porsche Centre Cardiff is likewise creating a race car for the series - we’ve a vast pool of knowledge, expertise and sheer Porsche passion to draw on.
We’re proud to say our 986 will feature classic Coca Cola livery, used by our Chairman Peter Lovett in the late seventies.
Currently racing in the MG ZR Championship, Ollie secured a win and a podium last season at Snetterton. Racing the mid-engined Boxster will be a change from the norm, as in the last few years has raced front-engined, front-wheel drive cars in the MG Trophy and Peter Best MG Cup, with several wins and high placed finishes.
Keep up to date with our race reports and details about the event via our Porsche Centre Swindon Facebook page. Our first race is fast coming up! Ollie comments, “I am both excited and nervous about the competition and cannot wait to see the Boxster ready to race”.
