Over the last few years, electric cars have grown in popularity and accessibility. It’s no longer the case that brands offer a solitary EV model amid a collection of petrol and diesel vehicles.
Today, electric cars are available in a range of styles and designs; SUVs, SAVs, hatchbacks and crossovers. There are lots of options now available, not least in the family electric car market. We’ve put together a list of ten of the best family electric car models available, including BMW, MINI, Porsche and Jaguar.

BMW’s first all-electric Gran Coupé, the BMW i4, is a family electric car that doesn’t compromise on style or performance, with 0-62mph acceleration in 5.7 seconds and a driving range of up to 365 miles* – plenty for longer trips and days out.
The BMW i4 is also available with M Sport trim, which delivers driving dynamics to an even higher level. Read more about the BMW i4 here and the BMW i4 M50 here.
Top Gear called the Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo, ‘quite possibly the best electric car on sale today’ so we’re certainly not going to disagree with that! Built for urban and country driving, the Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo has all the hallmarks of a classic sporty Porsche but also the versatility you need in a family electric car.
There are four models in the range, including the 4, 4s, Turbo and Turbo S, which has a top speed of 155mph. Driving range is up to 285 miles*.
Not every family electric car needs to be a large vehicle. The MINI Electric delivers a fun driving experience in a more compact format. This three-door hatchback has four seats, so it has the interior space needed for a family, and with an all-electric range of up to 145 miles* you won’t be caught short on the school run or during the weekend’s adventures.
The eight-year battery warranty is another excellent feature.

The I-PACE is Jaguar’s first ‘all-electric performance SUV’ so it’s a major development from the brand as it pushes on with its plans to go fully electric by 2025. The fully-electric architecture in the I-PACE allows Jaguar to combine luxury craftsmanship with 656 litres of loadspace within the car’s interior, where there is seating for five. Driving range on a single charge is up to 292 miles* and acceleration from 0-60mph is a rapid 4.5 seconds; there’s the performance aspect Jaguar hailed.
A winner of World Car of the Year, as well as World Car Design of the Year, the I-PACE is a genuine contender for the unofficial title of best family electric car.

Revealed as the ‘Best electric SUV to drive’ in the 2022 What Car? Car of the Year Awards, the BMW iX3 is the electrified version of one of this iconic brand’s most popular models, the BMW X3. Available in both M Sport and M Sport Pro trim, the BMW iX3 is noted for its superior handling and nimble steering. Its 0-62 mph acceleration of 6.8 seconds isn’t super-quick, but it’s quick enough for a family electric car.
Driving range is up to 285 miles* and charging is fast. Add up to 62 miles in just ten minutes using a 350 kW public power charging station.
The Kia EV6 is a fully electric crossover, available in two different powertrains – including rear-wheel drive (RWD) and all-wheel drive (AWD), which has an impact on the driving range. The RWD has a range of up to 328 miles, compared to the AWD’s 314 miles. A GT version is expected to hit the market soon.
Like other models in our best family electric car selection, it has impressive technology features. There’s good legroom in the front and rear, too, guaranteeing happy passengers, though the boot space isn’t as large as some rivals.
Would any list of family electric car options be complete without a mention of a Tesla? Probably not. We’ve chosen the Tesla Model 3 in our top 10. It comes in three different trim levels – the Standard Range Plus, Long Range and Performance, which tops the range.
Standard Range Plus is the entry-level model but while this is the more affordable option, its official range is 254 miles; lower than some competitors.
Skoda’s Enyaq isn’t perhaps as immediately appealing as others in this list – it’s no Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo – but it deserves a place among other best family electric cars. Why? Well, mainly because it’s a strong all-rounder, with a driving range of up to 331 miles on a single charge giving it greater capacity than others in our selection (apart from the BMW i4).
It’s also competitively priced and has plenty of interior space, including a large boot.
The Volkswagen Golf is one of VW’s best known and most popular models, and the ID.3 is an-electric hatchback of a similar size and with comparable characteristics. The ID.3 has an exciting, futuristic design look to it, though there is no longer a choice of trims, which may come as a disappointment. The ID.3 Life is currently the only option; with a different battery size of 58 kW, it has a range of up to 259 miles.
Performance is good, and models come well equipped, though the interior has been flagged as slightly disappointing by some reviewers. All in all though, it’s a solid family electric car.
The IONIQ 5 is a hatchback-style SUV that comes in three different trim levels – Premium, Ultimate and the Namsan Edition. Size makes it especially family-friendly; if you’re looking at all-electric Hyundai SUVs, it’s larger than the Kona and therefore provides more space and comfort for passengers.
This is a car built for cruising along in, with superb ride comfort. The IONIQ 5 comes with two different battery sizes, offering a choice of electric range from 238 to 315 miles.
