It’s a cinematic ‘wow’ moment when Q (John Cleese) introduces 007 (Pierce Brosnan) to his new motor in The World Is Not Enough.
With its long sleek hood and uber-cool detailing, the Z8 is every inch the perfect Bond car. A roadster that positively oozes sexiness with minimalistic styling.
Acclaimed for its beauty since its launch in 2000, the Z8 has gone on to become one of the most collectible BMW models of all time. Produced by BMW for only three short years, price inflation for Z8s means that buying one is pretty much a guaranteed investment!
Looking around the car we have here at Dick Lovett Swindon, here are just a few of the reasons we think the Z8 fully deserves its A-List celebrity status.
Retro Cool Style
With an exterior designed by Henrik Fisker and an interior by Scott Lempert, the Z8 was created to invoke the BMW 507 from the late 1950s. Driven by stars like Steve McQueen, Frank Sinatra and Elvis Presley, the 507 came to epitomise Hollywood glamour.
The Z8 beautifully captures all the retro cool of the 507, from its chromed side vents and horizontal front grilles to the extended bonnet and raised rear shoulder line.
Its interior too harks to its fifties’ muse with the speedometer, tachometer and other gauges all to the centre of the dash. A three-spoke steering wheel with leather-wrapped trim adds to the race car look.
Like Bond, we love our gadgets and are particularly taken with the black push-button starter that explodes the huge V8 engine into burbling life.
Make no mistake. The Z8 is a modern and hightech supercar underneath its retro wrapping.
Its 4.9 litre S62 V8 engine produces 394 horsepower and 368 pound-feet of torque, and is the same engine that was used in the E39 M5. Thanks to an electronic variable valve timing system, this beauty can purr sedately about town just as easily as it can pounce to 60mph in a little over 4 seconds.
We can thank the Z8 for bringing us possibly the coolest rear lights and turn indicators in motoring history. They are powered by neon tubes, giving a super-glow effect. Surrounded by slivers of chrome, these lights typify the attention lavished on every detail of the Z8.
From 2000 to 2003, BMW manufactured around 5,700 - for the whole world. Only available as a left-hand drive, only around 150 models were registered on UK roads during this period. Currently only 69 of those original UK cars are still registered on the road, many now being kept for posterity. Unsurprisingly, as the Z8 became a highly desirable classic car within a few short years.
Just as the 507’s rarity helped seal its fate as an all-time great (often fetching seven figure sums at auction), the Z8 looks similarly set for everlasting stardom, and value.
