The MINI Convertible is one of MINI’s biggest and proudest success stories. Originally launched in 1993, the Mini Convertible celebrated its 30th birthday in 2023, releasing a special MINI Convertible ‘Seaside Edition’ to mark the occasion. It’s been among the very best convertible models in the UK for decades, with new developments and redesigns helping it to remain a great option for anyone looking for a compact and fun soft-top.

The third generation of the MINI Convertible was released in 2016 (The F57), and since then it’s had two further facelifts – in 2018 and 2022. Newer used MINI Convertible models are the biggest yet, offering increased interior space.

Driving with the top down is one of life’s true motoring pleasures. A used MINI Convertible is a sporty model that has classic MINI design elements, a powerful engine and – the bottom line – is just a lot of fun to drive.

Acceleration varies depending on which engine your used MINI Convertible has, but all options are quick. The steering is responsive and agile, so this MINI is equally comfortable navigating twisty country roads as it is cruising on the motorway.

Inside and out, a MINI Convertible used model is a great-looking car. The exterior is striking and bold, with that added touch of MINI mischief – a range of colours, including Chili Red and Starlight Blue, make this a model that really stands out.

The exterior styling can be personalised too, so some used models might have racing stripes on the bonnet, or a Union Jack design on the roof.

The interior has a premium feel to it. The dashboard is dominated by the oversized central dial, and all models from 2021 onwards are fitted with the 8.8-inch touchscreen as standard. DAB Radio and Bluetooth are among the standard features.

There’s no need to be concerned with the unpredictable UK weather, as the folding roof is operated electronically and is easy to take down and put back up, as and when you need. It’s a fabric roof, so it’s light. Retracting it takes just a few seconds, and you can even do that while on the move, albeit at a relatively slow speed.

Want to know how often you drive with the top down? MINI Convertible models are fitted with an ‘Openometer’, which records how many hours you’ve driven with the roof down.

The boot space is sizable enough for a small car of its type. The capacity is 215 litres, though that reduces to 150 litres if the roof is down. The increased interior dimensions in newer used MINI Convertible models allow two adults to sit comfortably in the rear.

As standard, there’s a good selection of safety equipment and driver assistance systems, including tyre pressure monitoring, stability control and parking sensors. More functions are available as options.

The MINI Convertible range includes three different model variants, giving buyers a choice of engines. On newer used MINI Convertible cars, only petrol engines are available, as diesel cars have been gradually phased out in recent years.

The three engine options available are the Cooper, the Cooper S, and John Cooper Works. Older models also had the 1.5-litre MINI One variant, which is the entry level model. It was discontinued in 2015.

The Cooper is the entry level model. It has a 1.5-litre three-cylinder engine that delivers 136hp with 220Nm torque and 0-62mph in 8.8 seconds. Top speed is 128mph.

Next up is the Cooper S, which is a 2.0-litre four-cylinder. Performance is 178hp, with 280Nm torque and 0-62mph in 7.1 seconds. Top of the model range is the John Cooper Works spec. It’s also a 2.0-litre four-cylinder, but increases power to 231hp and 320Nm torque, and achieves 0-62mph acceleration in 6.6 seconds.

All engines are powerful, with the John Cooper Works the obvious top pick if performance is your priority. All engines on used MINI Convertibles are economical too, though the 1.5-litre Cooper is the stand out here – capable of returning 47.9mpg.

Six-speed manual transmission comes as standard, but automatic transmission is available on certain models.

The MINI Convertible comes in three trim ranges – Classic, Sport and Executive. Classic is the base trim but offers excellent value as it comes equipped with a great selection of features as standard. Automatic air conditioning, automatic LED headlights, 8.8-inch colour touchscreen – on newer used models, from 2022 onwards – and a steering wheel offering multi-function controls are all included.

Models with Sport trim are understandably styled to look sportier, with bucket seats, sports suspension and a John Cooper Works bodykit. The Exclusive trim is less sporty but more in line with luxury, typified by a plush leather interior and leather steering wheel.

In 2022, MINI released a special edition model. The Resolute Edition has exclusive bonnet stripes and Rebel Green paintwork.
