The MINI Clubman is one of the larger-sized models in the MINI family, just behind the Countryman. Although it’s unmistakably a MINI, with its hatchback styling, it’s more of an estate version and a genuine family car.

In fact, it was originally launched in 1969 as the Mini Clubman Estate, running until 1982. The MINI Clubman was relaunched and reborn in 2007. The second generation of the new Clubman, the F54, was released in 2016, with a facelift in 2019 featuring a new front end with a revised grille and headlights design.

The charm and fun of a MINI and the practicality of a family car. A used MINI Clubman bears all the qualities and characteristics of a typical MINI – sharp steering, punchy engine power – yet with more interior space than you might expect.

If you want a car with estate-like properties but in a more exciting package, the MINI Clubman will really appeal. It’s definitely a car that stands out, with distinctive styling – especially if you choose to personalise your Clubman, with options that include bonnet and roof stripes, and wing mirror caps.

The most notable design feature of the MINI Clubman is at the rear of the vehicle. The boot has barn-style doors, or as MINI calls them, easy open split rear doors for when you need to switch into ‘dog mode’.

Instead of opening upwards, the boot has split rear doors that open outwards – making it easy for the family dog to access the 360-litre area. No dog? No problem – it’s also a simpler way to get into the boot when you’re stashing luggage.

Inside, the interior styling on the dashboard is dominated by the classic MINI oversized dial, which displays information clearly and simply. Newer used MINI Clubman models have an 8.8-inch touch screen as standard – depending on the age of the vehicle, other models have a 6.5-inch screen.

The infotainment system is operated via a rotary controller, positioned in the centre console and can include sat nav and MINI Connected, which provides access to a package of features. Newer models also come with Apple CarPlay.

Some safety systems are only available as options, so when you’re viewing a used MINI Clubman for sale, check the specs to see if the particular model you’re looking at comes with the Driving Assistant Pack. Parking sensors do come as standard, as does Autonomous Emergency Braking.

Behind the wheel, driving a MINI Clubman is enjoyable and, if available, can be enhanced by using MINI’s Driving Modes system. This lets you switch between three different driving settings – Sport, Mid and Green. Sport maximises performance, Green maximises fuel consumption and economy, and Mid provides a balance of both.

The MINI Clubman range incorporates a choice of different engines, offering various levels of power. When you’re looking at used MINI Clubman models, pay attention to the engine variants. The type of engine inside each particular car will not only have an impact on performance, but potentially the price tag, too.

The Clubman has four different petrol engines and one diesel option – although that diesel engine was phased out in 2020, so you won’t find it on newer used models. If you do want a diesel car, older used MINI Clubman models for sale will still be available. The 2.0-litre diesel engine delivers 150hp and is capable of a combined fuel consumption of 65.7mpg.

If you prefer a newer Clubman, it’s petrol all the way. The entry-level spec is the relatively rare MINI One, which is a 1.5-litre three-cylinder engine with 102hp and 0-62mph of 11.3 seconds; top speed is 115mph.

Next up is the 1.5-litre three-cylinder engine in the Cooper Clubman. It delivers 136hp, 0-62mph acceleration in 9.2 seconds, and a maximum top speed of 128mph.

Moving up the range is the Cooper S, with a 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine that has a more powerful output of 178hp, a faster 0-62mph of 7.2 seconds, and a top speed of 142mph.

The third and most powerful petrol engine is in the John Cooper Works model. It has a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo engine, with 306hp. Put your foot to the floor and it’ll return 0-62mph in 4.9 seconds. Top speed is 155mph.

While other Clubman models are available with automatic or manual transmission, John Cooper Works are only automatic. It’s the only model in the line-up available with All4 four-wheel drive.

There are three different trim levels across the newer Clubman range – the base level Classic, then Sport, followed by Exclusive.

If you opt for the Classic trim, you still get plenty of equipment as part of the standard kit, including automatic headlights, sat nav, LED headlights and 16-inch alloy wheels.

The Sport trim upgrades to 18-inch alloy wheels, sports seats and cruise control, and adds JCW styling. The top-of-the-range Exclusive adds leather seating, exterior chrome styling and includes extras such as the Driving Assistant Pack.
