The Versatile Vehicle of Choice For The Royal Family
The Royal family’s special relationship with the marque dates back almost 70 years. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have taken home all three of their brood from hospital in a Land Rover - most recently Prince Louis in a Land Rover Discovery.
Prince Charles, Prince Harry, Princess Anne, Princes Eugenie, Princess Beatrice, Prince Edward . . . and so the list goes on. They’ve all either been driven to an event in a Land Rover or been spotted driving one.
The Queen’s Love Of Land Rover
And then there’s the Queen. As well as being Head of State she also heads-up the Royal family’s Land Rover league table (if there was such a thing!).
She is thought to have had no fewer than 30 Land Rovers. While she’s also had Jaguars, Daimlers and Bentleys, the Land Rover is clearly her favourite. Let’s face it, the faultless 4x4 performance, comfortable interior and responsive handling make it the perfect vehicle for jaunts out across Scottish country estates.
Perfect For Any Occasion: State Visits or Country Estates
There’s also plenty of room for Corgis and grandchildren and the raised driving position of models such as the Range Rover Sport, Range Rover Evoque or Range Rover Velar makes it equally perfect for drives out and about around busy Windsor Great Park.
But Queen Elizabeth II seems to be equally at home with the practicality of the Land Rover workhorses as she does with the more modern, luxury of the latest models in the fleet.
A 70 Year Relationship With Land Rover
Her first State Review vehicle in 1953 was a Land Rover Series 1, which was a much less luxurious affair. Even before that, her late father, George VI, was given the 100th Land Rover back in 1948 - he was reported to be delighted with it.
The Queen’s Customised Range Rover
In 2016, Land Rover was at the centre of the Queen’s birthday celebrations when, together with Prince Philip, she toured Windsor in her custom-made, burgundy, open-top Range Rover. It had a built-in flag on the bonnet. Plus handrails and fold-down steps.
The model was the perfect choice for meeting her legions of well-wishers as the diesel hybrid engine means it can be purely electric when needed and doesn’t pump fumes into the waiting crowds.
Personalised Bonnet Accessories Depending On Its Purpose
Prince Philip takes the bonnet accessories that one stop further - ornaments reflect the vehicle’s purpose, such as a galloping horse for racing and a Labrador with a dead pheasant for shooting.
Just two months before his 95th birthday, he was spotted driving the then US President Obama around Windsor in a Range Rover, with the then First Lady Michelle and the Queen in the back.
