Apprentice Vehicle Technician

Dick Lovett BMW Bristol

“Big journeys begin with small steps.”

I’ve always been into cars since a young age and much prefer working in a hands-on role. The training and opportunities in an Apprenticeship scheme were more suited to my preferred way of learning. I joined Dick Lovett as an Apprentice Vehicle Technician in 2019, went through the BMW programme and I’m now a qualified vehicle technician as of March 2023.

I work in a fairly large team, ranging from Apprentices, Technicians, Senior Technicians and our BMW Master Technician, all of whom are very helpful and create a great atmosphere to work in! As my manager Ron says, “The standard you choose to walk past is the standard you choose to accept” which builds a great environment. The staff are all very helpful and supportive.

My role now includes scheduled and general maintenance as well as diagnosing and repairing a wide range of systems. I also mentor new apprentices to help them learn and develop within their role.

Working on a very wide range of cars is my favourite thing about my job. I mostly enjoy working on the M power range as I have a background of racing and like the engineering and technology that has gone into the cars.

Every day brings new challenges to face, it’s a very interesting and varied place to work. The main challenge is learning the new systems, engineering and technology that’s changing in the cars over time.

My main highlight from my time here is definitely getting my Vehicle Technician qualification. It’s something I worked very hard for and I’m proud to have achieved it with Dick Lovett. I look forward to learning new things and progressing with Dick Lovett.
