The X6 was a bold launch by BMW at the time of its introduction – a fresh entry to the market as a Sports Activity Coupé, and a vehicle that had a strong claim to being very different to anything else out there. A sports car with the dimensions of an SUV, a used BMW X6 delivers high performance and a luxury ride, along with an attractive interior and a superb range of tech.

There’s a choice of petrol or diesel engines, and whichever you opt for, you’ll be impressed by the raw power and sharp acceleration. Because all used BMW X6 models are fitted with four-wheel drive (xDrive) traction and road control is excellent, even on challenging surfaces due to wet or wintry conditions.

Drive comfort is improved further by air suspension, which is standard on all models, while the 8-speed automatic transmission makes every journey feel effortless. Electrically adjustable seats with memory function add to the high comfort levels.

The interior is very easy on the eye, with a beautifully designed cabin, simple layout, and loaded up with tech. It includes a 12.3-inch instrument display screen – selected models may have the BMW Curved Display. This can be operated by touch or by the conveniently located rotary controller, in the console between the seats.

It also has a voice control function, and there’s a further option; gesture control. This allows the driver or passenger to operate it by pointing a finger or using other hand gestures.

In the back, the sloping roof has a slight impact on headroom, but there’s more than enough space for three adults to get comfortable. The boot is a good size – 580 litres with the rear seats in place, expanding to 1,530 when those are folded down. The split folding configuration means you can rearrange the rear seats as you need.

Driver assistance features and safety tech include cruise control, automatic braking and front collision warning.

Across the used BMW X6 range, there are different model variants with a choice of petrol or diesel engines.

If you’re keen on buying a BMW X6, take some time to review all the available engine options before making a decision. The entry level petrol model is the xDrive40i, which has a 3.0-litre six-cylinder engine that hits 0-62mph in 5.7 seconds; impressive enough. The petrol upgrade to that is the M50i model, which houses a big 4.4-litre V8 engine powered by twin turbochargers and ramps up the acceleration to 4.3 seconds.

The diesel engines on used BMW X6 models are the 30d, which is again a 3.0-litre six-cylinder version. While it’s not as fast as either of the petrol options, its 0-62mph time of 6.1 seconds is quick for an SUV type model. There’s also the 40d, which is quicker at 5.5 seconds, and the M50d which is quicker still at 5.2 seconds.

In addition, there’s a top of the range model. The BMW X6 M Competition’s V8 engine delivers 625bhp and achieves 0-62mph in an astonishing 3.9 seconds. It also includes other enhancements, such as Adaptive M Suspension Professional, M Compound brakes and M Steptronic Sport transmission. If you want to experience the very best of the X6’s driving potential, the M Competition could be your preferred model.

Depending on the trim level you choose, used BMW X6 models have different sized alloy wheels. All base versions are fitted with 19-inch alloys, but the M Sports models have alloys of up to 22-inch in size, depending on specification. M Sport models can also have enhanced design elements, including M Carbon mirror caps, and the option of an M Carbon rear spoiler, while the exhaust system features twin tailpipes, styled in black chrome.

Options and packs are available on the BMW X6, so any used model you consider might have some of these already fitted. These include the Technology Plus Pack, which incorporates Driving Assistant Professional. This provides access to a range of safety functions – Steering and Lane Control assistant, Emergency Stop Assistant and Automatic Speed Limit Assist, among them.
