About the BMW X5

Approved Used BMW X5 Image 1

The BMW X5 has a special place in the heart and history of BMW. Launched in 2000, it was BMW’s first entry into the SUV class, though the brand classed it as a Sports Activity Vehicle, an SAV. Notable for its luxury features, the X5 has been a huge success for BMW for over 20 years – and counting.

The BMW X5 has been developed and updated frequently since its first generation of model, which ran until 2006.

The second generation was in production from 2006 to 2014 and the third generation from 2014 to 2019. The fourth generation launched in 2019 and featured a number of updates, including a large front grille.

At Dick Lovett, we have approved used BMW X5 cars for sale, including nearly new models with the latest trims and tech. Explore our latest deals online or call in to any of our BMW dealerships. We’re located in Bristol, Hungerford, Melksham (near Bath) and Swindon.

Why Buy a Used BMW X5?

The BMW X5 is a large SAV that is comfortable, practical and a real joy to drive.

It has a range of superb engines – diesel, petrol and a plug-in hybrid – that deliver quick acceleration and effortless motorway cruising. Air suspension, which adapts to road conditions, comes as standard. This is a premium car, and as such, delivers an enjoyable experience whether you’re behind the wheel or relaxing in the generously-spaced interior as a passenger.

The driver’s seat can be adjusted electronically – this is a standard feature across all used BMW X5 models, regardless of trim – so you can set your seating position exactly the way you prefer it. Once that’s been set, there’s no need to keep doing it again, as the memory function means the seat ‘remembers’ your body shape. Leather seating adds to the luxury feel, and the overall finish in the cabin is of a very high standard.

Head and leg room in the front and rear of the X5 is expansive; three adults can sit with no trouble at all in the back. And, if you need to accommodate more than five people, there is the option of upgrading to seven seats, via a third row of seating. Boot capacity is also large, at 650 litres, in all models except the plug-in hybrid version, which reduces to 500 litres. That’s still a decent size, but something to bear in mind when you’re making a buying decision.

The infotainment system in a used BMW X5 is superb. The 12.3-inch screen can be operated in three different ways. Touch the screen, use the rotary controller in the centre console, or opt for voice control. It works with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and with BMW Connected Services.

BMW X5 used models are fitted with a good selection of driver assistance and safety features, including a reversing camera and parking sensors at the front and rear to help drivers squeeze into tighter spaces with no worries.

Tips & Advice for Buying a Used BMW X5

When you’ve made the decision to buy a used BMW X5, the next decision is – which type of X5 is right for you?

All X5 cars have an 8-speed automatic gearbox and BMW’s impressive four-wheel drive system (xDrive), so across the board there is a consistent standard. But, there are engine variants to consider, which may influence which BMW X5 used car to buy. Choose from diesel, petrol and the single plug-in hybrid electric (PHEV) engine.

The diesel engines are the xDrive30d, which is a six-cylinder 3.0-litre, and the more powerful M50d, which is also a 3.0-litre but delivers greater torque. If you prefer a used BMW X5 with a petrol engine, the xDrive40i is also a six-cylinder 3.0 litre. The top of the range petrol option is the M50i, which is a 4.4-litre V8 engine and 0-62mph acceleration of just 4.3 seconds.

The PHEV version is the BMW X5 45e. It teams a petrol engine with an electric battery but delivers a range in electric mode that’s between 50 to 60 miles, which is further than many other PHEV models. The trade-off with that larger battery though is a smaller boot, remember. For the benefit of being able to drive decent distances in electric mode, that might be the better option for you.

There are two different trim levels to choose between when purchasing a BMW X5. The xLine is the entry level trim, with the M Sport option being the top of the line trim. The M Sport variant has a higher price tag from new, so used models will reflect that difference, but these have larger alloy wheels, and other sportier features including an M Sport steering wheel.

The M Sport also has BMW’s Parking Assistant system, which is an upgrade to the standard parking sensors.

Selected used BMW X5 models for sale might also come fitted with options, which add to the cost but enhance the overall driving experience. These include the Comfort Package – heated seats, steering wheel, armrests – and the Driving Assistant Professional Pack. This adds features such as automatic speed limit assistant and lane-keeping assistant.

Whichever used BMW X5 you choose to buy, Dick Lovett can help with your purchase by providing a choice of finance plans. These include Personal Contract Purchase (PCP) and Hire Purchase (HP) agreements, which enable you to pay a fixed amount every month over a few years. This means you can spread the cost of the car over a length of time, which can make it more affordable.
