The BMW X4 might be based on the X3, but it has a thrilling identity of its own. Is it part of the impressive BMW SUV family, a coupé, or something else? The X4 is actually defined by BMW as a Sports Activity Coupé (SAC) and delivers a dynamic driving experience, enhanced by high-powered engines and sleek sports styling.

BMW launched the X4 in 2014, and the first generation of the model was produced until 2018.

The second generation was introduced in 2018, and three years later, the X4 was given a facelift and refresh.

If head-turning looks and impressive on road performance are high on your wishlist, a used BMW X4 is a strong contender. It’s a seriously sporty car, and while it’s not a genuine SUV in terms of practicality, it offers levels of comfort and capacity that you don’t get in most traditional saloons or coupés. In short, it’s a best-of-both-worlds package.

Let’s start in the best place of all; behind the wheel. The BMW X4 was built with performance in mind first, and it’s a delight to drive. Handling is agile and the engine options are strong, with petrol and diesel versions available, that provide various levels of power and punchy acceleration. All X4 models are fitted with BMW’s all-wheel-drive system, xDrive, and come with an eight-speed automatic transmission as standard.

The X4 isn’t the largest SUV BMW produces, but there’s still plenty of space, with generous head and leg room making it a solid choice as a family vehicle. The boot has a very decent capacity of 525 litres, which expands to 1,430 litres when the rear seats are folded down.

The design of the interior is modern and elegant, and the in-cabin tech is extensive. There’s a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment that, like other BMW models, can also be operated via the rotary controller. Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, sat nav, Bluetooth and DAB radio are all included.

The safety tech is equally impressive, contributing to a five-star rating from Euro NCAP. Features include standard systems such as autonomous emergency braking, active guard, and crash sensor. The Dynamic Safety system is available as an option.

A used BMW X4 is a sporty car, but performance and power is different across the range, depending on engine type and size.

If you’ve made the decision to buy one, the next decision is which specific model variant is right for you. The answer to that depends on what you want from a BMW X4 used car.

If you favour fuel economy, the entry-level diesel engine is a sound choice. The xDrive20d diesel can return 49.6mpg on the combined cycle, though the trade-off is a less powerful engine than other options, at 187bhp, and 0-62mph acceleration of 7.9 seconds. That’s fast compared to some cars, but there are quicker in the X4 range, if that’s your preference.

The M40i is a six-cylinder twin turbo petrol engine that can deliver a mighty 355bhp and clock 0-62mph in a rapid 4.8 seconds. The M40d diesel is only a fraction behind, as a 3.0 litre engine that does 0-62mph in 4.9 seconds. There’s also the xDrive30d,which is also a 3.0 litre capable of 0-62 mph in 5.7 seconds.

If you want higher performance still, the M Competition is top of the X4 range. It delivers a maximum top speed of 155mph and 0-62mph acceleration in 3.8 seconds, courtesy of its 503bhp trin-turbocharged 3.0-litre straight six engine.

Since the 2021 model facelift, there are no trim options to choose between as BMW dropped the Sport and M Sport X trims – though used BMW X4 cars before that year will still be available with them. Instead, all new X4s are available in M Sport trim.

Check BMW X4 used cars for any options they may already have fitted. You might pay a little more for those that do, but for that you get extra equipment. Options for the X4 include the Comfort Plus Pack (Electric front seats, driver memory), Technology Plus Pack (Drive Recorder, Driving Assistant Professional) and the M Sport Pro Pack (Active Protection, M Sport Brakes with blue callipers).
