About the BMW X3

Approved Used BMW X3 Image 1

The BMW X3 is a premium, midsize SUV that offers a luxury driving experience, strong power and performance, and lots of style.

The X3 was launched by BMW in 2004, following on from the larger SUV, the X5. At the time of launch, the X3 was one of the first SUVs of its type and though the market has been flooded with competitors since, it remains a standout model in a crowded field.

Originally only available with a diesel engine, petrol and plug-in hybrid engine options were added when the third generation of the X3 was launched in 2017.

At Dick Lovett BMW, we have a brilliant selection of approved used BMW X3 cars for sale, from older models at superb value right up to nearly new vehicles. Visit our BMW dealerships in Bristol, Hungerford, Melksham (near Bath) and Swindon to see the latest BMW X3 used cars in stock, or explore the full range online.

Why Buy a Used BMW X3?

The premium SUV class has an impressive membership, but the BMW X3 – one of the originals – is still one of the best options available. On-road performance, engine power, safety, in-car tech, cabin and interior comfort – a used BMW X3 delivers on all levels.

For sheer driving pleasure, the X3 takes some beating compared to other SUVs. All used BMW X3 models are fitted with the xDrive all-wheel drive system as standard, and the car’s handling is sharp, precise, and responsive. This delivers a smooth, dynamic drive, and a comfortable one at that.

Engine power varies across the range, but with a choice of 2.0 litre, four-cylinder or 3.0 litre, six-cylinder engines, there really isn’t a weak spot here. Performance wise, top speed varies from 130 mph to 155 mph, depending on the model variant, as does 0-62 mph acceleration. The top of the range M40i can return figures of 4.9 seconds.

Inside, the X3 is no less impressive. The cabin layout and design is easy on the eye and some of the standard specifications enhance comfort. Features such as adjustable seating, and heated seats, are welcome functions, as is climate control.

One of the major highlights of BMW X3 used cars are the infotainment, tech and safety features. Sat nav, DAB radio, and Bluetooth connectivity is standard across the range, accessible via the 12.3-inch display screen – which can be operated by touchscreen or the rotary controller.

Safety features include six airbags, emergency braking, lane departure warning, and a collision warning system, though not all functions are included as standard and may only be available as options.

*Key features of a used BMW X3 can include:

BMW iDrive
BMW Live Cockpit Professional
Driving Assistant
Sport Leather steering wheel
Front sport seats
Cruise control
Front and rear parking sensors
Adaptive LED headlights
M Sport Adaptive Suspension
Panoramic glass sunroof
Parking Assistant
Automatic Air Conditioning

The interior feels spacious, for a midsize SUV, and it can comfortably seat five people, with generous head and legroom. Boot capacity is 550 litres in petrol and diesel models, and opens out to a huge 1,600 litres when the rear seats are folded down. Good to know, for those occasions when you need extra stowage.

Buying a used BMW X3 from a Dick Lovett dealership means you can do so in full confidence. Every approved used BMW X3 model we sell comes with a genuine BMW warranty that offers unlimited mileage protection against breakdown, and repair costs for parts and labour on warrantable items  – including the exhaust and battery. This is for a minimum of 12 months, though newer used models may also still have the balance of the manufacturer’s warranty, too. Find your nearest Dick Lovett BMW dealership here.

Tips & Advice for Buying a Used BMW X3

Different trims, engine types, engine sizes – there are a few big decisions to make when buying a BMW X3 used model.

When you explore the range of cars available at Dick Lovett, you’ll usually have plenty of choice. What you choose to buy typically comes down to budget, but also driving preferences; do you prioritise high performance, or high fuel efficiency? Or a bit of both?

Before the third generation of the X3 was introduced in 2017, the model was exclusively available with diesel engines only. The latest iteration includes petrol and plug-in hybrid versions, as well as an all-electric model based on the X3, the iX3

Unless you’re looking for one of the older used BMW X3 models, you’ll be able to choose your favourite fuel type. There are now 2.0 litre and 3.0 litre petrol and diesel engine versions, while the xDrive 30e plug-in hybrid has a 2.0 litre four-cylinder engine with an electric motor. This is your best bet if you want lower fuel costs, though the plug-in hybrid has a smaller boot capacity than petrol and diesel models.

There are also two M40 models – M40i (petrol) and M40d (diesel) – which have beefy six-cylinder engines, but will usually be priced at the higher end of the used market.

If you’re looking to buy newer used models, BMW gave the X3 a design facelift in 2021, so these have exterior and interior updates, including a sportier design and the latest tech.

There are three different trim levels to consider. The entry-level SE has been discontinued on new models but may still be available on the used BMW X3 market. For the base model, the range of standard spec is impressive. Next is the xLine trim, which has larger alloy wheels and Sport leather steering wheel, while the M Sport upgrades to 19-inch alloy wheels, Sports seats, Sports suspension, and more.

Some used BMW X3 cars will come with optional packs already fitted, which enhance the car even further but nudge up the price. Options include the Driving Assistant Professional pack (rear parking camera, active cruise control), Comfort Plus pack (electric seats, heated steering wheel), and Technology Pack (wireless phone charging, Harman Kardon speakers).
