The BMW X2 is a new kind of SUV, a crossover model that embraces the sporty styling of a coupé.

It’s rugged and athletic enough to take on longer driving adventures but is equally comfortable cruising on city roads in an urban landscape. It’s fun to drive, providing a comfortable experience when purring along on the motorway, and an agile, responsive performance on single carriageways and country roads.

The exterior is unmistakably designed with a sports influence. From the sloping roofline to the wheel arches and the side skirts, a used BMW X2 makes a real impression. The interior is clean, simple and well equipped. The 8.8-inch infotainment screen is easy to operate, whether you choose the touch screen option or the rotary dial.

Sat nav is included, and on newer used BMW X2 models, Apple CarPlay comes as standard – it may only be an option on older cars – as does Bluetooth connectivity.

Used BMW X2 models are also fitted with an impressive range of driver assistance features and systems, so it scores well when it comes to on-road safety. What safety systems are included may change depending on the age and spec of the model you buy, but Active Guard, Dynamic Stability Control Plus, Crash Sensor, and front and rear parking sensors are all typically available as standard.

For a smaller SUV, the interior space is still good. There’s generous room in the front for both driver and passenger and though it’s a little tighter in the back for taller adults, there’s lots of legroom. The boot has a capacity of 470 litres with the rear seats in place, but expands to 1,355 litres with the seats folded down.

When buying a used BMW X2, it’s important to understand exactly what you’re getting in exchange for your money.

As with all BMW models, the X2 is available in different trims, with differing spec levels – not every model is equipped with the same features and functions – and with a choice of engines.

The available trims are the Sport, M Sport, and the M35i. Sport is the entry level model, so these are the most affordable, if you’re comparing different trims with the same year of registration. Next up is the M Sport, which enhances the Sport offering with additional styling, including 19-inch alloy wheels, more prominent front and rear bumpers, and heated front seats.

Top of the range is the M35i, which has a twin tailpipe exhaust system and an M Sport performance steering wheel. The ‘sportiest’ design in an already sporty range.

It’s not just about the trims and contrasting design elements and interior styling, though. Across the model range, there are petrol – 18i and 20i – engines, and diesel – 18d and 20d – engines. The diesel options have been discontinued by BMW but are still available on the used market and remain popular. As well as the differing engines, you also have the option of front-wheel drive (designated sDrive) or all-wheel drive (designated xDrive), as well as manual and automatic transmissions, subject to the engine chosen.

For the range-topping M35i, this features a high-performance 2.0-litre petrol engine pushing out 306hp with a 0-62mph time of just 4.9 seconds, and features all-wheel drive as standard.

The xDrive 25e plug-in hybrid engine is available on both the Sport and M Sport trim.. So, if you want to drive, switching between petrol power and electric battery, and enjoying higher fuel economy as a result, bear this option in mind.
