The BMW M4 is the high performance class of the popular 4 Series. Typified by its engine power and the superb driving experience it delivers, a used BMW M4 has a unique design and has become established as a class leader.

The first generation of the M4 (F82) was launched by BMW in 2014 as a coupé version of the M3 Saloon. The Competition model was added to the range in 2016, followed by the range-topping CSL, the lightest, and fastest, M4 version. The BMW M4 is also available as a convertible model (F83), providing the ultimate sporty motoring lifestyle.

There’s a lot to love about a BMW M4 used car. With its bright colour styling – Sao Paulo Yellow, anyone? – rapid acceleration, bold exterior design, and sophisticated interior, this is a confident car for those who take great pleasure in driving.

Power and performance across the M4 range is superb, though there are variations depending on which model you’re looking at – and whether it’s a used first generation F82 M4, or a newer used second generation G82.

Both generations have manual petrol models, with the F82/F83 models having the option of a dual-clutch transmission, and the G82/G83 models featuring an eight-speed automatic option.

Some models will be fitted with Active M Differential, which provides maximum traction, reacting to various road conditions to provide optimum driving dynamics. The optional Adaptive M Suspension, which is sensor-controlled and again reacts to driving style and the condition of the road to keep your driving comfort as high as possible. M xDrive is also available.

A used BMW M4 is a two-door model but this doesn’t make it a small car. The standard M4 has four seats – the CSL trim has two – and compared to other class rivals, it scores really well on a practical level. Passengers in the front and rear of the M4 will be seated comfortably, with more than enough space to stretch legs out, and the headroom is sufficient, too.

The boot capacity is large, for a coupé-style car, at around 445 litres. This reduces to 370 litres in the convertible model. The dimensions are the same across both the F and G series of used BMW M4.

M Sport seats come as standard, though some BMW M4 used models will be fitted with M Carbon bucket seats – available as an option – which provide additional support.

In-cabin tech is impressive, thanks to the innovative BMW iDrive system. A head-up display comes as standard, and the infotainment can be operated in two different ways. As well as the touchscreen, there is also a rotary controller located between the two front seats, if you prefer.

Included as standard is DAB radio, sat nav, and wireless charging, and you can upgrade the experience further with the optional 16-speaker Harman Kardon sound system. Depending on generation and trim, a used BMW M4 may also have other features included, such as Apple CarPlay.

Repair costs, parts and labour, are also covered for a minimum of 12 months for warrantable items, though on newer used BMW M4 models you may also benefit from the balance of the remaining new car warranty too.

All used BMW M4 models are two-door cars with 3.0-litre petrol engines, so there isn’t a lot of variation to consider in this regard when deciding to buy.

While older used models of the M4 have a manual gearbox and a DCT option, the newer versions of the BMW M4 also offer the choice of an 8-speed automatic transmission.

Consider the engine choice across both F82 and G82 models. The F82 has two 3.0 litre petrol engines, one with six-speed manual transmission delivering 431hp, 0-62mph in 4.3 seconds and a top speed of 155mph. The automatic seven-speed dual clutch transmission (DCT) also has 431hp but quickens 0-62mph acceleration to 4.1 seconds.

The Competition model also has six-speed manual and seven-speed DCT transmission. Both deliver 431hp but the DCT is faster, with 0-62mph of 4 seconds compared to 4.3 seconds from the manual.

The latest generation G82 has a six-speed manual engine that delivers 480hp with a fractionally quicker 0-62mph time of 4.2 seconds. Drivers can use the gear lever or gearshift paddles on the steering wheel, or use one of the three available automatic driving modes – Efficient, Sport and Sport Plus.

The Competition version is available with all-wheel drive or rear-wheel drive and has an eight-speed automatic M Steptronic with Drivelogic that has an output of 510hp and a rapid 0-62mph of just 3.9 seconds.

With a range of flexible plans, buying a used BMW M4 with Dick Lovett has become more affordable. With a Personal Contract Purchase (PCP) or Hire Purchase (HP) agreement, the cost of an approved used vehicle is spread over a period of time. The length of agreement can be set according to your own circumstances, but is usually anywhere between 24 and 48 months.

With a finance agreement, you pay a fixed sum every month and either own the vehicle at the end of the term, or have the choice of buying it, or switching to a different model.
