The fifth generation of the M3 (F80) was in production from 2014 to 2020, with the sixth generation released in 2021 – that was available for the first time, as an estate model – the M3 Touring (G81). You can read more about the history of the BMW M3 here.

If you’re looking for a dynamic driving machine with impressive ride quality and generous levels of luxury styling, you’ll want to buy a used BMW M3. This is a big car, with a big presence, and it backs up its reputation with impressive performance on the road.

The main attraction for potential buyers is the M3’s driving capability, and it definitely doesn’t disappoint. Performance is spectacular. On F80 models, the hefty 3.0 litre engine delivers 431 bhp and 0-62 mph acceleration in 4.1 seconds – that’s on the standard model. On the M3 Competition, performance bumps up to 450hp and 4.2 seconds for 0-62mph. The M3 CS pushes harder and faster, at 460hp and 3.9 seconds.

The newer G80 BMW M3 Competition delivers 510 bhp and 0-62mph acceleration of just 3.9 seconds (BMW M3 Competition with M xDrive in 3.5 seconds). The CS version has a power output of 550 bhp, and clocks 0-62mph in 3.4 seconds.

Most used BMW M3 models come fitted with the Driving Dynamics Control system, which enables you to choose between driving modes. These include COMFORT mode and SPORT mode. COMFORT is for everyday driving, while SPORT nudges the performance level for when you want to pick up speed. The M3 is equipped with 19in and 20in alloy wheels, depending on the trim.

Inside a used BMW M3, you’ll find a high quality interior with leather seating. In the rear, two adult passengers can be seated comfortably. Should you need additional room, load capacity can be increased by folding down the rear seats. That may only be needed occasionally; boot capacity in both the F80 and G80 BMW M3 is 480 litres.

The infotainment system can be operated by touchscreen or, if you prefer, by the rotary controller, which is located in the centre console between the vehicle’s front seats. Some models provide voice control functionality to operate certain services, too.

A high level of spec comes as standard with a used BMW M3. That includes the Parking Assistant package, sports seats, and an electric driver’s seat. There are options available, with other packs, but it’s good to know that the standard used BMW M3 is pitched at such a strong entry level.

What type of used BMW M3 are you interested in? With the F80 model running until 2020 and the newer G80 introduced in 2021, when you’re exploring used BMW M3 cars for sale you’re likely to see models from both generations.

The F80 range includes the standard version of the M3 and the more powerful M3 Competition. The G80 range starts with the impressive Competition, which is available with or without M xDrive.

This includes BMW’s excellent xDrive system, providing four-wheel drive, and comes with Sport Automatic Transmission, with Gearshift Paddles. It has a M TwinPower Turbo 6-cylinder petrol engine, and eight-speed Steptronic sport transmission.

Topping the range is the BMW M3 CSL, which delivers more power and faster acceleration than any other used BMW M3. It’s also lighter. Lightweight construction, with plastic components reinforced with carbon fibre (CFRP) reduces weight by around 20kg compared to the M3 Competition.

The CS has the M Driver’s package as standard, which pushes the top maximum speed up to 180mph (the standard is 155mph).

The release of the BMW M3 G80 range also included an associated model – the M3 Touring, G81. The Touring is an estate version which delivers 510hp and 0-62mph of 3.6 seconds. It has a slightly bigger boot space than the saloon models, at 500 litres.

Across the M3 model range, there are a selection of other optional packs available, so some used BMW M3 models will come with these fitted. These include the Comfort package (keyless entry, electric boot lid and heated steering wheel); Technology package (additional safety kit, such as radar cruise control and more parking cameras than you get as standard); and the Carbon package (M Carbon bucket seats, rear spoiler and carbon-ceramic brakes).
