Performance, luxury, comfort, and style – there’s a lot to admire about a used BMW M2. Even by BMW’s exceptional standards, the M2 is a special model.

Although it has drawn inevitable comparisons with a 2 Series, it shares the same engine as the BMW M3 and M4. The M2 is fitted with a high performance 3.0 litre M TwinPower turbo six-cylinder petrol engine, which kicks out a punchy 460bhp; 0-62mph is 4.4 seconds. Quick enough for you?

Superbly responsive steering and sharp handling complement the driving experience, and the used BMW M2 has other performance tricks up its sleeve. The Adaptive M suspension means drivers can adapt to road conditions. Driving Experience Control enables you to adapt the chassis using electric controls, while the Active M Differential provides ‘optimised traction and driving stability’ via the rear-wheel drive.

Thanks to BMW’s lightweight construction concept, the M2 is significantly lighter than other cars on the road. The M Carbon roof is made of carbon-fibre reinforced plastic, which makes it approximately 6 kg lighter than steel-based alternatives and helps to lower the car’s centre of gravity for improved agility.

The interior has classic BMW styling, with the M steering wheel and leather seating among the features – M Carbon bucket seats are available as an option for an even sportier effect. Though it’s obviously not as spacious inside as a five-seater, for a coupé-style car it has more room than might be expected, in the front and the rear. A used BMW M2 can seat four adults, with two in the back. The boot also has a reasonably large capacity for a car of this type, at 390 litres – bigger than some class rivals.

On used BMW M2 models, the BMW iDrive infotainment system comes as standard. It has touchscreen functionality but can also be operated using the rotary controller which is positioned on the centre console.

Firstly, if you’re keen on buying a used BMW M2, be clear on what type of car it is – a high-performance two-door sport-style model.

For sure, there are larger, more family-friendly used BMW models available, but for sheer driving excitement and pleasure, the M2 is an outstanding example if it fits your motoring lifestyle.

A key buying consideration will be the age of the used BMW M2 model. Obviously, newer models are generally priced higher than older models, but with the M2, the introduction of vehicle upgrades has an impact.

The original BMW M2 was launched in 2016, and was the only type available until 2018. Models from this era are typically priced at the lower end of the scale, so you can find great value here, while still getting plenty of driving joy from that 3.0 litre engine, 370 bhp and sharp acceleration.

From 2018, the Competition model was released, pushing that power to around 430 bhp and 0-62mph in 4.2 seconds. You’ll pay more for a used BMW M2 Competition as a result, but if that extra performance is important to you, it’s worth it.

Topping the used BMW M2 range is the stunning CS, which debuted in 2020. This model pushes performance harder and faster still – maximum speed can clock 174 mph. It’s a spectacular car, but bear in mind you’ll need a sizeable budget if this is in your sights.

Used BMW M2 models are available with either a manual or automatic transmission, while annual road tax is lower on cars post-2017. The type of used BMW M2 you choose will have an impact on insurance cost too, with the CS positioned in the highest group, 50.
