There are more practical alternatives. The used BMW i8 is a two-door car and while, inside, the headroom and legroom in the front is generous enough, it’s more compact by design in the rear. In the Roadster, there are no rear seats.

BMW based the construction of the i8 on a lightweight concept called LifeDrive architecture. This features an aluminium chassis (the Drive module) and a passenger compartment made from carbon-fibre (the Life module). This is both high-strength and ultra-light.

A choice of driving modes means the i8 can be powered by the petrol engine (Sport mode) or exclusively by the electric battery (Comfort, Eco Pro). Using the latter obviously cuts running costs right down. The battery range is up to 34 miles, so sufficient for shorter trips.

While an older used BMW i8 for sale can represent great value, often available at under £40k, newer models from 2018 onwards have a larger battery capacity, more power, and that Roadster option for open-air cruising.
