The BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo is a spacious five-door executive-style coupé with impressive tech options and a superior level of comfort. It’s a versatile kind of model, with BMW commentating on the GT’s ‘ultimate travel comfort, supreme driving dynamics, and luxurious space’.

Launched in 2017, the BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo (G32) was intended as a successor to the 5 Series Gran Turismo — but longer, lower, and lighter, with notably bigger boot capacity. Available in a choice of petrol and diesel engines, and offering xDrive options, it was updated in 2020, before the production of new models ceased in 2023.

The BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo is a practical car, but a million miles away from being merely sensible and solid; BMW doesn’t do ordinary. First impressions of the 6 Series GT are of a sleek, sports-influenced coupé-like car with a sloping rear roofline that tapers down into a hatchback design.

That hatchback end contains one of the Gran Turismo’s most appealing features — certainly so if you want a vehicle with plenty of load space — because the boot is huge. With a capacity of 610 litres, it improves on its 5 Series sibling by 80 litres (which was 530 litres). And, should you ever need more space still, the rear seating configuration means you can fold the rear seats almost completely flat, increasing its storage capacity to 1,800 litres.

The generosity of interior space is a running theme throughout a BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo used car. In the rear, the seats can comfortably accommodate three adults and the long wheelbase allows for lots of legroom. In the front, it’s a similar situation; electric front seats come as standard, providing the perfect position for comfort.

With ambient interior lighting also standard, every ride in a used BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo is a pleasurable one. Even more so if your model has been fitted with options such as extra-comfort chairs, heated back seats, electric backrest adjustment or — ideal for longer journeys — rear entertainment screens.

The dash layout is sophisticated and smart, dominated by the 10.25 inch screen that showcases BMW’s outstanding iDrive system. This can be controlled by touchscreen, voice control, gesture control, or via the rotary controller between the front seats.

There’s an impressive selection of tech features, including BMW Active Driving Assistant, which comes as standard, and includes lane departure warning and blind spot monitoring. A remote parking system is on the options list, so some used models may have this extra feature already fitted.

A choice of engines — including petrol and diesel — means performance varies across the range. The entry level 620d — one of the diesel engines — has a top speed of 135mph, and 0-62mph acceleration in eight seconds.

All models were available with the option of BMW’s xDrive all-wheel drive system, with 640d featuring this as standard. All variants have 8-speed automatic transmission.

Used BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo models are available with a choice of different engines, including petrol and diesel. The petrol engines are the 630i — a 2.0-litre four-cylinder — and the 640i, which is a 3.0-litre six-cylinder.

The 630i delivers up to 254 hp, with 0-62mph acceleration in 6.3 seconds, and a top speed of 155mph. The 640i is more powerful, capable of 340 hp and a 0-62 mph time of just 5.4 seconds. The 640i has BMW’s excellent xDrive four-wheel drive system.

There are three diesel engines. The 630d and the 640d were available from launch, while the latest — the 620d — was added to the line-up in 2018. The 620d is classed as the entry level model and the smallest in the series, though its 2.0-litre engine delivers 188 hp and hits 0-62 mph in 7.9 seconds. The 3.0-litre 630d is 261 hp, with 0-62 mph in 6.1 seconds. The 630d and 640d models are also available with xDrive. The 630d with xDrive fractionally improves 0-62 mph by a second, to a flat 6.0 seconds, while the 640d xDrive clocks 5.3 seconds. This potent diesel is capable of 315 hp.

There are three trim levels available on BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo used models — SE (the base model), M Sport, and M Sport Pro Edition. The SE trim includes a reversing camera, parking sensors, and LED headlights. M Sport specification is designed to give your BMW an altogether sportier appearance, with body kit, 19-inch alloy wheels, and a sports steering wheel among the additional features.

The M Sport Pro Edition includes the impressive Harman Kardon speaker system, M Sport brakes, sun protection glass, and larger alloy wheels yet, at 21 inches.

While you won’t be able to request these trim levels when buying your car — as you can when you purchase a new BMW — it’s worth seeing what trim level a used model is. You want a sportier-looking used BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo, in which case, prioritise one with M Sport.
