Engine range, body style, choice of trim – there are lots of factors under consideration if you’re thinking of buying a used BMW 5 Series.

The most important of these buying choices is surely body style. The BMW 5 Series used range has two; the Saloon, which has a sporty exterior, and the Touring, which combines driving dynamics with the increased size of an estate model. There isn’t a better option – it completely depends on your preference and what you’re looking for.

Within the BMW 5 Series used range, there is a good choice of different engines, with petrol, diesel, mild hybrid and hybrid all available, in sizes from 2.0 litre to 4.4 litre.

The entry-level petrol model is the 520i. This model delivers 0-62 mph in 7.9 seconds, and a top speed of 146 mph, but if you want next level performance, the M550i has a massive 530BHP and hits 0-62mph in a rapid 3.8 seconds.

Diesel engines include the 518d, 520d, 530d and 535d. There’s still plenty of punch in the used BMW 5 Series diesel versions, with the mild hybrid 520d the pick in terms of fuel economy (combined MPG is 58).

The hybrid engines include the 530e and the 545e, which provide all-electric ranges between 34 and 37 miles, though older used BMW 5 Series may be slightly less.

There are two different trims available. The SE is the base model, but is well equipped with standard spec including ambient interior lighting and LED headlights. Or, you can opt for the M Sport trim, which brings larger alloy wheels, aerodynamic bodystyling, and, in selected engine models, M Sport brakes.
