The first major decision when buying a used BMW 4 Series is which body style to choose. Each of them – Coupé, Gran Coupé, or Convertible – offers a different quality, depending on what you’re looking for.

For a classic ‘sports car’ experience with agile handling and dynamic on the road performance, a used BMW 4 Series Coupé puts a big tick in that box. The Convertible is more of a classy cruiser – plus, it provides that lovely top-down touch in warmer weather. The Gran Coupé is a great combination of both, as a larger vehicle that suits a family but still delivers an excellent drive, in a practical package.

In the used BMW 4 Series market, there’s a choice of different engines, including petrol and diesel, and some with mild hybrid technology. Sizes range from 2.0 to 3.0 litres. Both automatic and manual transmission is available – another consideration to bear in mind when buying a used BMW 4 Series.

The type and size of engine is a factor when it comes to performance, and fuel efficiency. Larger engines are more powerful, but if you prefer economy and rate MPG over BHP, opt for a smaller engine. BMW has streamlined and simplified the trim selection in recent years, so the SE, Modern and Luxury trims have been phased out – though they may still be available on older used BMW 4 Series. The trims now include the Sport, M Sport and M Sport Pro Edition. Selected models are fitted with XDrive, which is BMW’s four-wheel drive system; a useful option to have in challenging road and weather conditions.
