The first generation of the BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé launched in the UK in 2014, offering five doors and five seats, but in a car that drove more like a dynamic coupé than a family-friendly saloon.

The second generation arrived at the end of 2021, introducing an updated version of the Gran Coupé that was wider, taller and longer, with increased interior space.

The Gran Coupé is part of BMW’s acclaimed 4 Series that also includes the 4 Series Coupé and 4 Series Convertible. But, while both the Coupé and Convertible are two-door models and unmistakably classic sports cars, the Gran Coupé has a superb surprise to share.

It’s a car that takes its grown up motoring responsibilities seriously, with five full-sized seats large enough to accommodate a family and generous head and legroom providing plenty of comfort for the driver and up to four passengers.

The surprise? Well, the BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé integrates that practicality with an elegant sports edge. Yes — you can have a BMW that is tailored for daily driving tasks and is a genuine joy to pilot, too.

With optimised steering and dynamic handling, combined with BMW TwinPower Turbo engines, a used BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé performs like a dream on the road. Performance is enhanced further still if your used model comes fitted with variable sport steering with Servotronic and M adaptive suspension — both optional features.

Acceleration varies depending on engine type — more detail on that later — and the Gran Coupé excels as a cruiser, smoothly negotiating motorways with refinement and comfort. It’s a car that makes light work of any journey.

Inside, passengers are assured of a pleasant drive. Front headroom is spacious, and if your BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé used model has optional electric adjustable seats fitted, your passenger can easily find the perfect seating position.

In the rear, there are three full-size seats. In comparison to the first generation, the latest iteration of the Gran Coupé is more spacious, and it also compares favourably against the 4 Series Coupé; this is a model with bigger proportions. The boot space measures 470 litres — again, an increase of 39 litres on older used BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé models. If you need more space still — and have no-one sitting in the back — slide the rear seats down and capacity maxes out to 1,290 litres.

Because this is a BMW, you’d expect the tech to be of a high standard — and you won’t be disappointed. In post-2021 models, BMW Live Cockpit Plus comes as standard, with an audio system that features six speakers and a DAB+ Tuner, while BMW Operating System 7 is also standard-fit. Enjoy optimised smartphone integration, which streams with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and Amazon Alexa, which can be set-up via the My BMW App.

That covers the entertainment, but what of the safety tech? Standard features include Cruise Control with brake function, Front-collision warning, Speed Limit Info and Lane Departure Warning. There’s a lot to think about, and our team of BMW experts can certainly help. While all our BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé used cars for sale are of high quality, you will find some variations across the range – with different engines, different trims, and different capabilities.

We stock both first and second generation BMW 4 Series Gran Coupés. Models dated from 2021 onwards are the newer version, with a new design. These cars are also wider, longer and taller, sleeker in profile, and with more space all round, including the boot.

There are four engines to choose from. The three petrol engines are the 420i – the entry level version — the 430i, and the range-topping M440i, which has BMW’s xDrive all-wheel drive system. There’s only one diesel engine, the 420d, though it also comes available with the option of xDrive.

The M440i is the most powerful, capable of 374hp and a rapid 0-62mph time of just 4.7 seconds; top speed is 155mph. None of the variants are exactly slow though — the 420i has a top speed of 146mph and clocks 0-62mph in 7.9 seconds.

Like for like, you’ll pay more for the M440i but there are also other trims to consider as well as any options that might already be fitted on used models. M Sport has goodies such as leather sports seats and a reversing camera. M Sport Pro Edition models have M adaptive suspension, M Sport differential, 19-inch alloy wheels, and more.

The level of features that come as standard on the Gran Coupé is high, but if you want a used model that has just that bit extra, look for one fitted with one or more of the optional packs. These include the Technology Pack – Harman Kardon 16-speaker sound system, wireless charging — and Comfort Pack — heated steering wheel, keyless entry, more USB ports. There are also enhanced versions of both of those, with the Technology Plus Pack and the Comfort Plus Pack.
