A big family needs a big car — but that requirement for increased interior capacity shouldn’t come at the expense of stylish and sophisticated motoring. This is an MPV with class; a lot of class. It’s a similar model to the impressive Active Tourer but larger, with seven seats instead of its sibling’s five — so those two extra seats give it a sizeable advantage when it comes to capacity. However, thanks to BMW’s clever internal layout, the seating can be configured in a number of ways to maximise storage and passengers in transit. If you don’t need the two extra seats, you can fold them away and expand the boot capacity to 645 litres.

Push the middle row of seats further forward, and that jumps to 805 litres. Fold the whole row down — no need for manual effort, this is operated electronically — and the available internal storage capacity then leaps to a massive 1,905 litres. While you won’t be able to order a new 2 Series Gran Tourer and build it exactly as you want it, you will be able to browse used models and compare the various trim levels.

The entry level BMW 2 Series Gran Tourer is the SE, and it comes very well specced. For a base model, it’s fitted to a high level with functions including climate and cruise control, rear parking sensors, a multifunctional steering wheel, auto lights and wipers, and iDrive. The Sport version adds sports-style seating and larger (17-inch) alloys wheels, while the Luxury upgrades to heated front seats and leather upholstery.

Topping the range is the M Sport trim, which provides an M leather steering wheel and M Sport seats, and the option of yet larger (18-inch) alloys. Additional options that previous owners of BMW 2 Series Gran Tourer used models may have chosen include a panoramic sunroof, lane departure warning, and parking assistant. Used BMW 2 Series Gran Tourer models are available with petrol and diesel engines. The petrol engines include the 216i, the 218i, and the 220i. The three diesel engines are the 216d, 218d, and 220d. With the 220d, there’s the option of xDrive, BMW’s four-wheel drive system.

Selected engines are available in either manual or automatic transmission, so again, check the spec on any BMW 2 Series Gran Tourer used car you’re considering buying. The petrol 216i comes as manual or automatic, while two of the diesel engines — 216d and 218d — are also available with manual or automatic gearboxes. All other engines are automatic only, including the most powerful petrol version (220i, 192 bhp) and diesel version ( 220d, 190 bhp).

Performance and economy varies across the engine range. The 220d is capable of achieving an impressive 53.3mpg, while the 218d improves on that slightly at 56.5mpg. Top speed across the range is 117mph.
