The BMW 2 Series Active Tourer is a stylish and premium Multi-Purpose Vehicle (MPV). Available in a wide choice of engines – including two different plug-in hybrid versions on latest models – it combines a fun drive experience with a top-class interior.

The first generation of the 2 Series Active Tourer (F45) was launched in 2014, and was in production until 2018, when BMW gave the range a facelift. This introduced further engine options, including those PHEV engines, giving used BMW 2 Series Active Tourer buyers lots of options.

If you don’t want an SUV but need a vehicle that’s large enough to keep pace with busy family life, a used BMW 2 Series Active Tourer is worth closer inspection. Don’t confuse an MPV with a functional people carrier; this is a sporty model, with a sleek exterior design, that is unmistakably a BMW vehicle – from its top-class cabin to high quality ride comfort.

The exterior styling on the latest version of BMW 2 Series Active Tourer used models has slimmer front headlights and a larger front grille, to accentuate the bold and modern experience.

Inside, there’s lots of space for driver and passengers, with generous head and leg room. This is a five-seater vehicle that’s designed to be family friendly and functional. Need something larger still? The BMW 2 Series Gran Tourer is a seven seater and offers even greater capacity.

Boot space in the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer varies slightly across the range. It’s 470 litres in the 218 diesel model; fold down the rear seats and capacity widens out to 1,405 litres. In the 220i and 223i mild hybrid models, boot capacity reduces slightly to 415 litres.

The cabin has a high-end feel to it, with plush seating materials and excellent levels of comfort. The infotainment system can be operated by touching the 10.7-inch screen, or by voice, giving drivers hands-off control when behind the wheel. Newer BMW 2 Series Active Tourer used models come with a curved display screen, and built-in features include sat nav, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and DAB radio.

Safety systems as standard include automatic emergency braking and dynamic stability control, with others available in optional packs which may be fitted on selected used models.

Across the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer used range there are a selection of different engines, offering variations in both performance and fuel economy, so potential buyers are spoilt for choice.

The full used BMW 2 Series Active Tourer range is available with several engine variants, offering petrol, diesel and – since 2018 – plug-in hybrid options.

Petrol engines include the 216i, 218i, 220i and 223i. The 216i is the least powerful of these, with 109hp and 0-62mph of 11.3 seconds. The 218i improves that to 136hp with 0-62mph of 9.3 seconds, while the 220i is a three-cylinder delivering 168hp and 0-62mph acceleration of 8.1 seconds. Top speed is 137mph.

The fastest, and most powerful, petrol engine is the 2.0-litre 223i. It hits 0-62mph in 7 seconds, with 218hp.

The pick of the diesel engines on used BMW 2 Series Active Tourer cars is the 220d xDrive. Fitted with eight-speed Streptronic automatic transmission, it clocks 0-62mph in 8.8 seconds and can achieve a combined fuel economy of over 50mpg.

There are two other diesel models – the 216d and the 218d. The 216d is a 1.5-litre that delivers 136hp, with 0-62mph of 11.1 seconds, though fuel economy is an impressive 58.9mpg. The 218d is a 2.0 litre, with 150hp, 0-62mph of 8.8 seconds and fuel consumption of 56.5mpg.

The two PHEV models are the 225e – 245hp and 0-62mph in 6.7 seconds – and the 230e, which delivers an impressive 322hp and a fast 0-62mph time of just 5.5 seconds. On the previous generation 2 Series Active Tourer, the 225xe Hybrid has 224hp and a 0-62mph time of 6.7 seconds.

In all-electric mode, both the 225e and 230e plug-in hybrid models have a range of up to 50 miles. The PHEV versions also come with a long battery warranty of six years, or 60,000 miles (whichever occurs first).

There are three different trim levels available – Sport, Luxury and M Sport. Sport is the entry level model and very well equipped, with automatic LED headlights, air conditioning, parking and windscreen wipers all among the standard features.

The Luxury trim adds comfort features, including leather upholstery and heated front seats. M Sport maximises the sporty image, with a rear spoiler, sports seats, M Adaptive suspension, and 18-inch alloy wheels.

Some used BMW 2 Series Active Tourer models will have packs and optional equipment already added, which could increase the price but provide better value with additional features.

The Comfort Pack includes electric front seats and driver memory system. The Technology Pack has front heated seats, high beam assistant and adaptive LED headlights. The Driving Assistant Professional Pack for extra features: blind spot warning, front and rear cross traffic warning.
