Since 2009, almost all BMW cars are fitted with run-flat tyres as standard, providing extra safety to drivers of their vehicles.
Although not a solution to the problem of punctures, it does make them far less of a pressing concern should they occur and can mean you are able to get to your destination without having to stop in dangerous places or precarious situations.
If you’re not sure whether your BMW is fitted with run-flat tyres, just get in touch with your nearest Dick Lovett dealership to find out. We can check your vehicle, and discuss your options if you do want BMW run-flat tyres fitted. We also offer a 0% finance plan when you spend over £250, so you can spread the cost of BMW Run-flat tyres across affordable monthly payments for up to six months*.
Our BMW dealerships are located in Bristol, Hungerford (near Andover and Newbury), Melksham (near Bath) and Swindon. Get in touch with us today to find out more.
Run-flat tyres are designed to help you keep driving even when a puncture takes place.
There are two types of tyres designed to assist when a puncture occurs, with the first being self-healing tyres which automatically re-seal themselves when a puncture happens. These can be inefficient though, as they let air out of the tyre first before the sealing layer can work, thus reducing pressure.
The second type of BMW run flat tyres are self-supporting tyres. These are the type of run flat tyres recommended by BMW. With reinforced sidewalls, they reduce the risk of an accident that is likely to occur by the sudden loss of tyre pressure and can prevent swerving, in the event of a blowout, or having to stop in dangerous places like on the hard shoulder. With a denser sidewall supporting the tyre, it prevents the wheel from collapsing until you can reach a point where you can safely get assistance.
Run flat tyres for BMWs have the technology to allow you to continue driving for another 50 miles at 50mph after damage is sustained.
This means that they are not an end to deflated tyres, but they do allow for situations where you may not have a spare or where conditions are not suited to pulling over and changing your tyre.
With BMW fitting run-flat tyres as standard to most of their models for over a decade now, the likelihood of your car having them is quite high. However, if you want to be certain then you can check the markings on your tyres to identify whether they are run-flat or not. Tyre brands use different markings, so it is worth checking what brand of tyre you have first. Once you’ve done so, you should look for the following:
ROF – This stands for Run On Flat and is typically used by Goodyear, Bridgestone and Dunlop for their tyres.
EMT – EMT is Extended Mobility Technology and is another marking for Goodyear. Despite being a different marking, it still means your tyre can run for 50 miles at 50mph while punctured.
ZP/ZPS – This is the Michelin and Yokohama equivalent of ROF and equates to Zero Pressure. It is also used by some other brands too.
If you’re looking to buy BMW tyres and want to know the cost, be aware that they will vary depending on size, thickness, brand, and seasonality of the tyre. However, because of extra reinforcement and materials used in run-flat tyres, they do typically cost around 50% more than standard tyres, although the benefits can justify the extra cost depending on your circumstances.
At Dick Lovett BMW, we match your performance needs and style with approved tyres of a standard as advanced as your BMW, so we can provide the perfect tyre for your specifications.
