The new Z4 has already proved its mettle by shaving three seconds off the lap time clocked up by a BMW M2 at the Nürburgring. The range topping BMW Z4 M40i has a 302bhp 3.0-litre six-cylinder petrol engine and covers 0-60 in just 4.6 seconds.

All engine options are paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission, which offers lightning-fast gear changes using paddles on the steering column. Three trims are available - Sport, M Sport and M Performance, although M Performance will only be available on the M40i.

Overall, the new BMW Z4 has a more angular look than its predecessor with large vents and grills and slimmed-down headlights. It's also longer, wider and taller than before and has perfect 50:50 weight distribution. It's 50kg lighter than the previous model. Instead of a retractable hard-top the new BMW Z4 has a soft-top which can be raised or lowered twice as fast as the current model. That's just 10 seconds at speeds of up to 31mph.

The boot of the new BMW Z4 is 50% larger than the current model with a capacity of 281 litres. It's also packed with technology, drive assistance systems include active cruise control, lane changing warning system, parking assistant, collision warning and braking intervention. A 10.25" iDrive system even updates navigation maps over-the-air meaning you always have the latest information at your fingertips.

In front of the driver, the instrument panel is all-digital and can be customised using BMW Live Cockpit Professional. You can even unlock the new Z4 from your smartphone when it's paired with the digital key.
