Entering its fourth-generation, the new BMW 1 Series has sharpened its profile. With cutting-edge design and relentless innovation to match, the F70 has evolved from the previous F40, but what exactly is different?
A synopsis
Innovative, individual, and intelligent. The new BMW 1 Series presents an upgraded interior and exterior from the F40 model. Modern technologies such as the BMW Curved Display, featuring Operating System 9, have been introduced to enhance the driving experience, whilst striking new engineering provides a refreshed exterior aesthetic featuring the newly interpreted BMW kidney grille and an imposing rear. BMW also introduces mild hybrid technology for the first time in the model's history, to further improve efficiency vs. the previous model.
A quick glance and you already get a different feel about the car from its predecessor.
Exterior Design
Let’s start with the updated double kidney grille - a charismatic addition featuring a new unique geometric pattern which creates a three-dimensional effect.. This, plus the redesigned, narrower headlights, give the new 1 Series a strikingly flat and sharp front end.
Meanwhile, the rear displays a more aggressive look than the previous 1 Series. The distinctive rear apron with vertical reflectors and black insert in the style of a diffuser gives the car its dominant and fearless look from behind.
The new BMW 1 Series has an extensive list of colours to choose from, but it is also the first model in the brand’s range with the option of a contrasting roof paint finish. On top of this, additional M Performance parts are also available to enhance the sporty aesthetic of the new 1 Series.
Interior Design
As we take a seat inside the vehicle, the sporty yet premium ambience of the new 1 Series is evident. With a strong focus on enhancing the driving experience, the updated upholstery and interior features reflect a commitment to comfort and style. The Sport variant features Cloth Anthracite as standard and the M Sport and M135 XDRIVE both come with an M Alcantara/Veganza combination upholstery with black/blue contrast stitching as standard. The cabin is also enhanced with illuminated finishes, offering multiple points of dynamic lighting.
BMW has integrated its latest technology to modernise the cockpit, whilst remaining innovatively spacious. The now iconic BMW widescreen Curved Display, alongside the latest Operating System 9 and optional head-up display, all combine to provide an enhanced driving experience. Furthermore, features such as Driving Assistant and Parking Assistant now also come as standard for the upgraded F70. A variety of digital controls, including touch, voice, and gesture commands, make for a seamless interaction between the driver and vehicle for ultimate convenience. This means there are very few ‘real’ buttons in comparison to the F40, which is evident with the new centre console and gear selector.
The Smaller Details
The latest 1 Series has actually increased in size, albeit not by a lot. The length has increased by 42 millimetres to 4,361mm and the height has increased by 25 millimetres to 1,459mm.
You’ll also notice that BMW has removed the ‘i’ from the model designation of the latest 1 Series. Previously used to signify a petrol model, the ‘i’ is no longer required as the F70 1 Series line-up consists purely of petrol vehicles in the UK – this also helps to avoid any confusion with BMW’s electric sub-brand known as BMW i.
Key Performance Stats:
Looking into the performance of the new 1 Series range, all models now come equipped with a 7-speed DCT transmission, with a new generation of TwinPower Turbo engines for all models too. The 120 still features front-wheel drive whilst the 123 and M135 are upgraded to all-wheel drive, and as expected we can see an upgrade in power and speed for the M135 over the 120 and 123.
