intelligent. ingenious. incredible. BMW’s electric and hybrid i cars are all these things and so much more. Kind to the environment and your bank balance, quick and easy to charge, stylish good looks, great performance - and eligible for Government grants.
And while their electric credentials and ground-breaking technology share the same parentage, the cutting-edge BMW i3 is a very different beast to the futuristic BMW i8 supercar.
Which one you choose very much depends on your budget and your needs.
The BMW i3 starts from £34,075. There is no road tax to pay and this nippy compact qualifies for a Government ‘plug-in’ grant of up to £4,500 off the purchase price.
There is also a grant to help cover the cost of installing a home charging point - called the Electric Vehicle Homecharge Scheme - which effectively brings down the cost of a home charger from around £1,000 to a couple of £100.
With lowered suspension, redefined aerodynamics and adaptive torque steering, the BMW i3s is a compelling drive for those wanting sportier handling, with a 0-60mph of under 6.9 seconds.
There’s also the option of the Range Extender model. This adds a 650cc engine with a 9.0-litre fuel tank and gives a total range of up to 186 miles. Fuel economy comes in at around 195 mpg.
The head-turning BMW i8, which is available from £112,000, might miss out on the plug-in grant but it does still qualify for the homecharge scheme.
Charging times are quick for both models - up to 80 per cent of the battery capacity at a quick-charging DC station in under 40 minutes. BMW also offers a custom BMW i Wallbox and a BMW i Wallbox Connect for AC home charging of between three and four hours.
Then there’s the heart-stopping performance of the award-winning i8 coupe. The figures are astonishing - 0-60 in 4.4 seconds and a top speed of 155 mph - putting it right up there with the the best sports cars on the market today.
But how many supercars can boast fuel economy of 134.5mpg?
Power comes from a 1.5-litre three-cylinder petrol engine that generates an impressive 231hp and 320Nm of torque with the aid of its turbo. This is coupled with BMW's eDrive system, which comprises a high-voltage lithium ion battery, an efficient electric engine and an ingenious energy management system.
On the battery alone the range is around 34 miles but there’s a 42 litres fuel tank waiting in the wings to keep you moving, delivering a combined range of around 330 miles.
