The future is here, and it’s yours to drive. The new BMW i8 Coupe and two-seat i8 Roadster have concept car good looks and a revolutionary drivetrain. The award-winning BMW i8, with the latest eDrive technology and intelligent energy management is a modern redefinition of the supercar with serious eco credentials.
Not since the BMW M1, produced 40 years ago in 1978 has a mid-engined BMW been in production but this car can compare to that revolutionary car thanks to its state-of-the-art features and futuristic look. It’s sure to turn heads!
Power comes in the form of an electric motor, and BMW TwinPower Turbo three-cylinder petrol engine supported by BMW’s eDrive system and ingenious energy management system, which when combined have a power output of 374 hp / 570 Nm (420ft/lb of torque) to rapidly accelerate the BMW i8 from 0 to 62mph in just 4.4 seconds (4.6 seconds in the new i8 Roadster) up to an electronically limited 155mph.
The unique combination of these two motors thanks to BMWs revolutionary Efficient Dynamics which reduce CO2 emissions and improve fuel economy, without compromising on performance or driving dynamics. enable quick acceleration and enviable fuel economy. The 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine alone provides an impressive 231hp and 320Nm of torque while still providing a frugal combined fuel economy of 148.6mpg in the i8 Coupe and 134.5mpg in the i8 Roadster when used in conjunction with the 129bhp electric motor designed by BMW which provides power through a revolutionary multi-speed automatic gearbox.
The BMW i8 is a masterclass in german engineering. Its unique construction of Carbon Fibre Reinforced Plastic (CFRP) passenger cell and doors can be seen as soon as you get in the car and contribute massively to its overall weight savings, weighing 50% lighter than conventional steel construction and 30% lighter than if it were made in Aluminum.
Alongside Aluminium front and rear subframes this keeps the i8 at a nimble 1,560Kg.
Outside, the unmistakable look of BMW continues, with double kidney grills at the front, and the look hasn’t changed much from the concept vehicle that inspired it. Wide and low, the BMW i8 has a purposeful low down supercar silhouette with short overhangs at the front and rear. with features added to maximise its aerodynamic efficiency.
Feeling every bit the concept, even opening the dihedral doors creates a sense of occasion. Hinged to move forwards and upwards to create an almost gull-wing look for practicality and well as supercar showmanship, you won’t tire how the car makes you feel.
Large 20” wheels fill the arches which sculpt around the unique LED rear lights.
Variable Damper Control (VDC) as standard help to control the car around city driving or spirited country roads while Drive Performance Control enable you to switch into ECO PRO, Comfort and eDrive modes (for pure electric driving) at the touch of the button, enabling you to achieve staggering MPG returns for a supercar such as this.
Inside things continue to impress. Open the doors to be greeted by an unmistakable BMW interior, revised and perfectly laid out with a futuristic twist. Blue accents not to the i8 exterior detail while sustainably tanned leather bucket-style seats in a choice of three colours hug you and passengers as you drive.
This is still a serious performance car, and this can be see in the low, focused driving position, housing the driver with digital screen and dashboard and head-up display allowing you to keep you eyes fixed on the road ahead.
Laden with technology, the BMW i8 comes with a host of interior comforts as standard: Climate control, electrically adjustable heated front seats, 8.8” touchscreen, Harman/Kardon speakers, DAB radio Bluetooth and Head-up display all come as standard.
The i8 Coupe allows you to take a further two passengers in the rear, while the Roadster sacrifices these for a removable top.
Eco credentials continue inside with recycled materials used where possible, but you wouldn’t know as it retains classic BMW quality and refinement. You can even add a bespoke Louis Vuitton luggage set as optional extras.
As you would expect from a high-spec BMW, the i8 comes with
