Performance & Practicality - The Perfect All-Round Package

The BMW M340i and M340d Saloon have rightfully earned their place as two of the most popular and highly-rated M Performance models in the range. They fuse together the everyday usability of the 3 Series with a portion of the incredible performance of the M3 Competition, to form one of the best all-round packages on the market.

Both of these 3 Series M Performance variants share many characteristics, but the biggest difference is their engines. The M340i utilises the legendary B58 6-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine, while the M340d is equipped with the brilliant, 6-cylinder turbocharged B57 diesel.

These are undeniably two fantastic power plants, that are subtly assisted by mild-hybrid systems that provide a variety of great benefits, from responsiveness to efficiency, and even a boost in power. All of this means that the M340i has a total power output of 374 bhp and 500 Nm, while the M340d produces 340 bhp and 700 Nm.

Paired with xDrive all-wheel drive systems and an 8-speed ZF automatic transmission, both cars deliver rapid 0-62 mph times - 4.4 seconds in the M340i and 4.6 seconds in the M340d. However, it’s been widely proven that these models are even quicker than their quoted times. While the M340i has the edge when it comes to speed and sound, the M340d provides better fuel economy of up to a claimed 46.3 mpg, compared to the M340i’s 34.4 - 34.9 mpg.

In comparison to the Touring version of the M340i and M340d, the reduced weight of the Saloon provides performance benefits, but is slightly less practical. This means that the M340i Saloon is 0.2 seconds quicker to 62 mph than the Touring equivalent, while the M340d Saloon is around 0.1 seconds quicker.

The BMW M340i Saloon starts at £58,830, while the M340d starts slightly cheaper at £58,470. They share an excellent variety of standard equipment, including - M Adaptive Suspension, M Active Differential, Parking Assistant, Adaptive LED Headlights with High-Beam Assistant, curved display with iDrive 8.5 operating system and much more.

A variety of premium optional packages can also be specified to enhance the experience even further. Features range from the likes of the Harman Kardon Surround Sound audio system and electric seats with driver memory, to front M Sport Seats and a heated steering wheel.

Visual customisation is also fantastic on the M340i and M340d. From alloy wheel designs and size, paint colour, interior trim, and leather upholstery, you can really make the car your own. The recent LCI, more commonly known as a facelift, has provided a refreshed exterior look as well as interior changes such as the newly designed flat bottomed steering wheel, illuminated air vents, and the option for glass CraftedClarity controls.

M Adaptive Suspension

M Adaptive Suspension is controlled via the Driving Experience Control buttons and offers a comfortable yet sporty suspension set-up. There is also adaptive damper control that can lower up to 10mm as well as automatic ride-height adjustment, depending on the vehicle load.

In addition to this, stiffer bearings, higher camber angle, and body struts for increased rigidity, are also included as standard on these models.

M Sport Differential

Another fantastic performance upgrade received by the M340i and M340d, is the M Sport Differential. This improves traction, agility, stability, and driving behaviour depending on the driving situation and road surface conditions.
