Top down cruising in a stylish, sports car loaded with hi-tech features and with rapid acceleration – there’s a lot to love about a used BMW Z4. That it’s enormous fun to drive is no surprise at all, but the Z4 is more than just a weekend car best used during the summer. It’s perfectly positioned for everyday driving.

The joy of driving a roadster is clearly to embrace open-air motoring. When the weather isn’t pleasant enough to do that though, don’t worry. While older models had a hard top, the soft top on the newer BMW Z4 is light and easy to operate; it takes just ten seconds to retract, even when you’re on the move. You can quickly switch from top up to top down as you wish.

Whether that roof’s up or down, performance is smooth, with agile and responsive handling – especially if you opt for the M40i model. All used BMW Z4 cars have eight-speed automatic transmission. Driving dynamics can be enhanced further with M Sport differential – which optimises traction, stability and grip – available on M40i models, M Sport braking and variable sport steering.

The exterior design includes the famous BMW front kidney grille and twin exhaust tailpipes.

The interior is plush, with leather seats as standard. M Sport seats, with integrated headrests, are fitted in some used BMW Z4 models, with ambient lighting also available.

In the cabin, selected models have a 10.3-inch infotainment touchscreen, which can also be operated using the iDrive rotary controller, located in the centre console, if you prefer that to tapping the screen. On newer models, satellite navigation, DAB radio, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and Bluetooth are all built into the infotainment system.

As a two-seater car, there is no space for passengers in the rear, but the boot is pleasantly large for a vehicle of this type. The capacity is 281 litres, which compares well against other roadsters.

There isn’t a confusing list of trim options with a used BMW Z4, which makes any buying decisions much simpler.

There are three different engines available on newer models (the E89, from 2009 to 2016, had seven engine variants) all petrol, all automatic, and all with manual and sport driving modes. The sDrive20i is the base, or entry level, model. With a 2.0-litre engine, it delivers 197bhp with 0-62mph acceleration in 6.6 seconds and a top speed of 149mph.

Next up is the sDrive 30i, which has a larger 3.0-litre engine delivering a more powerful 258bhp, 0-62mph in 5.4 seconds, and capable of a top speed of 155mph.

The top model variant is the M40i, which can record 0-62mph in 4.6 seconds, thanks to a 3.0-litre six-cylinder engine that provides 340bhp. It has the same maximum speed as the sDrive30i – 155mph – but if sharper and more exhilarating acceleration is on your wishlist, this is the model for you.

Trims are the M Sport and top-of-the-range M40i. The standard range of spec is good; all models have that electric folding roof, the BMW Live Cockpit Professional infotainment set-up, 18-inch alloy wheels and other features.

Step up to the M40i, and M adaptive suspension is added, as well as M Sport brakes with blue calipers. Electric seats with memory function are also part of the M40i trim. Heated seats and a heated steering wheel are standard on used BMW Z4 M40i models.

BMW does offer a selection of packs as options, so as you consider used BMW Z4 cars for sale, look out for the inclusion of these. They may add to the price of the vehicle, but also add to a more enjoyable, comfortable, and safer drive.

Options include the Visibility Pack (Adaptive LED headlights, High-Beam Assistant), Technology Pack (Head-up display, Parking Assistant, Harman/Kardon Surround Sound Audio System) and Driving Assistant Pack (Active Cruise Control, Driving Assistant).

The Shadowline Plus Pack - which is available on M40i models - adds exterior design aspects such as 19-inch black alloy wheels, black mirror caps and Shadowline Exterior Trim.
