Supreme comfort and superb on-road performance – a used BMW M5 is a car of genuine character and a pleasure to drive. If you’re searching for the ultimate performance saloon, there are few more complete models than the M5 available. In fact, it’s a saloon with the look and feel of a supercar.

There’s so much to admire with the M5. BMW drivers might take performance for granted, but the M5 is arguably on a different level. The BMW M5 Competition has a mighty 4.4 litre M TwinPower Turbo 8-cylinder petrol engine that’s capable of delivering 625 hp, with torque of 749NM.

What this means for acceleration is 0-62mph in just 3.3 seconds, and a potential maximum top speed of 190 mph – if your used BMW M5 is fitted with the M Pro package. Even without it, the BMW M5 can hit a limited 155 mph. With its rapid acceleration, raw power, and responsive handling, the M5’s performance on the road is unrivalled. But driving a used BMW M5 is a joy beyond the high speeds it's capable of.

Adaptive M suspension adapts to your individual driving style and the road conditions to maximise comfort and control, while the Active M Differential improves traction and handling.

Drivers and passengers will feel thoroughly spoiled during their journeys in the M5. Used BMW M5 models are styled with a full leather interior and adjustable sports seats, so there’s no compromise on comfort. Seats in all models are heated, and if you want to boost the in-car experience further still, some have the optional massage function fitted to the front seats. Headroom and legroom is generous, so five adults can sit in the M5 with no trouble at all.

BMW’s critically acclaimed iDrive navigation set-up comes as standard, while there’s a head-up display and infotainment screen. Wireless charging, online services, and DAB radio are also included, and, as with other BMW models, there is the option of controlling it all using the rotary controller. This is positioned between the two front seats; touchscreen functionality is also available.

The warranty is backed by BMW, and includes the exhaust, battery, and other parts. BMW Roadside Assistance and MOT Cover for 12 months are also included. In recent years, BMW refined its M5 range down to a single model – the M5 Competition (with the exception of the limited edition M5 CS which we’ll cover later).

The Competition has one engine option – the legendary 4.4-litre twin-turbo petrol – so there’s nothing to choose there. What is worth considering, even for a superior car like a used BMW M5, are the optional packs to enhance the driving experience even further.

Those options include the Technology Pack (Harman Kardon Surround Sound System), Comfort Pack (Electric Boot Lid), Entertainment Pack (Rear Seat Entertainment), Technology Plus Pack (Drive Recorder, Driving Assistant Professional) and Comfort Plus Pack (Front Massage Seats).

BMW Individual was also available on used BMW M5 models, which enabled owners to give their car a bespoke exterior colour scheme and interior styling.

Aside from the Competition, the BMW M5 CS may be available as a used model, though it’s much harder to find – not least as it was only produced for 12 months with a worldwide total production run of just 1,000 cars. This limited production cycle means it’s typically in high demand, and it’s quicker still than the Competition, hitting the 0-62mph mark in 3.0 seconds.

Whichever used BMW M5 you buy, running costs aren’t exactly low, with annual tax and insurance – the M5 is in one of the highest groups – likely to be expensive. But admirers of the BMW M5 will consider these to be a price well worth paying, in exchange for driving such a prestigious vehicle.
