Inspired by the globally successful 8 Series, the Gran Coupé is a relatively new addition to the BMW model line-up. Launched in 2019, the Gran Coupé offered a more spacious version of the 8 Series Coupé – a sporty model but with a longer wheelbase (by 201mm) than the 8 Series. That extra length, together with a higher roof line, means driver and passengers get increased head and leg room.

For a four-door car, the Gran Coupé looks surprisingly sleek; clever design and engineering means this, unmistakably, retains the soul of a coupé, with its low-slung body shape and sloping roofline. Exterior highlights include the BMW kidney ‘Iconic Glow’ front grille (depending on model), LED ambient lighting, and — on certain models — an electric panoramic glass sunroof. This is an option, so some used BMW 8 Gran Coupé cars will have this eye-catching feature fitted.

Driving an 8 Series Gran Coupé is a joy. Performance varies depending on model variant, with the entry-level 840i’s BMW TwinPower Turbo 6-cylinder petrol engine capable of delivering 333 hp, 0-62 mph in 5.4 seconds, and hitting a top speed of 155mph. Adaptive M suspension ensures ride comfort, adjusting for road surface and driving conditions.

M Sport comes as standard on all used BMW 8 Series Gran Coupé models, so the base model 840i already has a high level of spec, including 20-inch M light alloy wheels, M Sport leather steering wheel, M Sport differential, M Sport brake, front and rear heated seats, and M Aerodynamics package.

There are optional packs available to further equip the 840i; some used 8 Series Gran Coupé models for sale may already come with one or both of these fitted. You may pay a higher price for this, but you’ll benefit from additional features.

The 840i M Sport Gran Coupé Comfort trim has the Comfort Plus pack, which includes Soft-close doors, Ventilated Front Seats, Electric Rear Blinds, Heat Comfort System, Roller Sunblinds, and Anthracite Alcantara Headlining.

The 840i is rear-wheel drive, powered by a six-cylinder petrol engine, with eight-speed automatic Steptronic transmission. Combined fuel consumption is up to 33.2 mpg (WLTP).

If you crave a more powerful version, the all-wheel drive M850i won’t disappoint. Fitted with BMW’s M TwinPower Turbo 8-cylinder petrol engine, it’s capable of 530 hp and can hit 0-62mph in a rapid 3.9 seconds. This extra power sees fuel economy take a dip, though, falling to 25.7mpg (WLTP) in comparison to the 840i.

The Ultimate Pack is available on the M850i xDrive, so some used BMW 8 Series Gran Coupé models may already have had this added from new by a previous owner. Features include M Adaptive Suspension Pro, Laserlights, M Lights Shadowline, Bowers & Wilkins Diamond Surround Sound System, Driving Assistant Professional, and Parking Assistant Plus. Integral Active Steering comes as standard on all M850i xDrive models.

There’s also the BMW M8 Competition Gran Coupé, which is more powerful still than the M850i. This also has the TwinPower Turbo 8-cylinder petrol engine and delivers 625 hp, with a 0-62mph time of just 3.2 seconds. The M Pro Pack – which includes the M Driver’s Pack, which boosts top speed to 190mph — and M Carbon Pack are options on the M8 Competition, so check the spec of any used model to see if these have been added.
