Aston Martin’s Vantage is a two-door, two-seater model that delivers an exhilarating drive – and looks spectacular, too. It’s available with either a V8 or V12 engine, and as a roadster/convertible or as a coupé.

The Vantage has been an integral part of the Aston Martin line-up since the 1970s and has undergone multiple upgrades, enhancements, and relaunches since. The modern version of the Aston Martin V8 Vantage made its debut in 2005, with the V12 Vantage following in 2009.

The V8 Vantage Coupé was added to the range in 2011, and the V12 Vantage S in 2013.The latest generation of the Vantage Coupé was introduced in 2018, with the Roadster updated in 2020.

The Aston Martin Vantage is a stunning sports car, with the performance to back up its stunning appearance. It’s exciting to look at, let alone to get behind the wheel and drive.

First - that exterior. The Vantage is sleek and low-slung, with smooth curves. It’s light and looks lean and muscular; streamlined, even. Get behind the wheel, fire up the engine – V8 or V12 – and you’ll be hooked by its pulsing growl. It’s ready to go, immediately.

Put your foot down, and the acceleration is punchy and fast. How fast depends on which type of used Aston Martin Vantage you have, but we don’t think you’ll be disappointed by the entry-level V8 model. The latest generation of the Vantage V8 can deliver 503hp, with 0-62mph in 3.8 seconds. That’s the roadster version. The coupé shaves that down by the blink-of-an-eye to 3.6 seconds.

You can optimise performance by toggling between the three available driving modes – Sport, Sport + and Track – while ride comfort is modified using the adaptive dampers that are fitted as standard.

Inside, the theme is unmistakably and unashamedly one of luxury. It’s a two-seater sports car, so interior space isn’t ever going to be vast, but Aston Martin’s clever design means it’s comfortable and practical.

There’s plenty of head and leg room for two adults in the front sports seats, which are styled in leather upholstery and can be adjusted electronically to set the optimum position for driver and passenger.

The infotainment system in the latest generation of used Vantage models is much improved on older versions, with an 8-inch touchscreen hosting a series of functions. It includes Bluetooth connectivity, DAB radio, built-in sat nav and Apple CarPlay – on models from 2017 onwards. As well as operating by touch, you can use a rotary dial controller, too.

There are no rear seats, though boot space is verging on generous; the coupé has a capacity of 350 litres, which is bigger than you might expect in a sports car, and bigger than other class rivals.This reduces to 200 litres on roadster models.

Buying a used Aston Martin Vantage can be a straightforward process. Unlike some model ranges, there aren’t many trims or multiple different versions to understand and mull over – it comes down to a choice between a coupé or roadster style, and a pick of two engines.

The options are a V8 Vantage or a V12 Vantage. Both are available as a coupé – a hardtop – or a roadster, which has a retractable soft roof to enable drivers to enjoy open top cruising when the weather allows. Production of the current generation of the V12 Vantage was limited though, so bear in mind these models may not appear for sale as frequently.

In terms of performance, there’s very little to split the coupé and roadster versions. The coupé is slightly faster; the V8 returns 0-62mph in 3.6 seconds, with a top speed of 195mph, compared to the roadster’s 3.8 seconds and 190mph. Not enough to make a discernible difference when driving, so it comes down to the simple preference of wanting to drive with the top down, or not.

The mighty V12 6.0-litre engine does ramp up the power. Compared to the V8 models, both the coupé and roadster versions deliver 690hp, and top speed can reach 200mph. Acceleration is virtually identical to the V8 cars though, with the roadster clocking 3.6 seconds (the same as the V8 coupé) and the coupé hitting 3.5 seconds.

Aston Martin has also released limited and special edition versions of the Vantage over the years, which may be available on the used market. These include the V12 Vantage S, which launched in 2013 and was in production until 2018. Capable of a top speed of 205mph, it was also available as a roadster.

There’s also the Vantage GT8, though this will be harder to find. Aston Martin produced just 150 of these in 2016, so they’re a genuine collector’s item. Also available, though harder still to find for sale, is the Vantage GT12. Only 100 of these were ever made.

And, in celebration of Aston Martin’s proud racing heritage, there is the Aston Martin Vantage F1 Edition. It has a coupé and roadster version, each delivering 527hp and 0-62mph acceleration of 3.6 seconds (coupé) and 3.7 seconds (roadster).
