Welcome to the wonderful world of Aston Martin Zagato, this may be a world you are fondly familiar with, or perhaps one you are eager to join - but either way it is is one of the most brilliant automotive partnerships in Aston Martin’s history.
A collaboration that stems over 50 years; it began with the Aston Martin DB4GT Zagato in 1960 and continues all the way up to 2017 with the Vanquish Zagato.
So, who are Zagato?
Zagato is of Italian origin and in the 1960’s was a Milan based Italian Coachbuilder, founded by Ugo Zagato. With years of experience of reclothing exotic machinery with lightweight bodywork, Zagato would make the perfect partner for Aston Martin’s David Brown when it came to creating a car a race worthy DB4GT.
Who could have known then that the partnership would continue for many years to come and that the DB4GT Zagato, due it its rarity and popularity, would go on to auction for an excess of well over £9 million in the modern day.
The Aston Martin and Zagato collaboration is often regarded as a work of art and these vehicles are crafted in limited numbers to preserve uniqueness and specialness as well as creating something that is truly collectible.
As Dr Andrea Zagato himself says ‘ They are indeed the choice of the ‘individualist’ a person who appreciates understated style, beauty and substance, but is not afraid to be different’.
Own a piece of history
It is the lucky few who ever get the opportunity to experience an Aston Martin and Zagato collaboration within their lifetime. But this year at Aston Martin Bristol the stars seem to have aligned and we currently have 4 once-in-a-lifetime cars from the Zagato collection for sale with us.
The DB7 Zagato
Produced between 2003 and 2004 the DB7 Zagato is 1 of only 99 units ever produced. Originally only available in Europe and South East Asia this car is now a collectors item worldwide.
How fast? We hear you ask. Well the DB7 Zagato has 440bhp and with a Naturally Aspirated V12 engine, does 0-60mph in just 4.9 seconds. Not to mention it has a 6 speed manual gearbox!
The V12 Zagato
Even more limited in numbers the V12 Zagato is 1 of only 61 units ever produced. This car too has a Naturally Aspirated V12 engine alongside a 6 speed manual gearbox. With 440bhp the V12 Zagato is capable of 0-62mph in 4.2 seconds.
This particular car, featured in the 2013 Aston Martin Centenary Celebration and comes with an original A3 Zagato Brochure with the car signed by Dr. Ulrich Betz who was Aston Martin CEO at the time. Just like the One-77, the V12 Zagato is constructed from a combination of hand crafted aluminium and carbon fibre.
The bonnet, Zagato’s signature ‘double-bubble’ roof and doors are hand-crafted aluminium, while the front and rear fenders, door sills and boot lid surround are made from carbon fibre.
The Vanquish Zagato Coupé
Produced between 2016 and 2017 the Vanquish Zagato Coupé is 1 of just 99 units produced. The entire car’s bodywork is shaped from race-bred carbon fibre with minimal split line due to larger one-piece panels.
The Vanquish Zagato also carries the iconic Zagato “Double Bubble” roof panel. One of the fastest Zagato’s this car has a 0-62 mph time of just 3.5 seconds (which is very quick). With 592 bhp, a Naturally Aspirated V12 engine and an 8 speed ZF gearbox it is truly something special.
The Vanquish Zagato Speedster
Perhaps one of the most unique Zagatos, the Vanquish Zagato Speedster is 1 of just 28 units produced. It’s perhaps most notable feature is its missing roof. The two speedster humps over the rear of the car represent Zagato’s traditional double bubble roof, because of course, there is no roof.
It was the third addition to the family of Vanquish Zagato’s with four models completing the line up. Equally as fast as the Vanquish Zagato the Speedster has a 0-62mph time of 3.5 seconds and shares the same Naturally Aspirated V12 engine with 8 Speed ZF gearbox, albeit a slightly higher bhp of 595.
The ultimate collectors item
These cars provide a unique opportunity to own a part of Aston Martin history and are the ultimate collectors item, but they are also cars designed to be loved and enjoyed and we have no doubt that they would make the perfect addition to any Aston Martin lovers garage.
