Superleggera. For hardened Aston Martin fans it needs no explanation. For others, let’s just say it’s the absolute pinnacle of everything Aston Martin stands for - performance, elegance, speed, agility and the best supercar handling out there.
Now the Superleggera name is back. The highly-anticipated Aston Martin DBS Superleggera was officially launched on the 26th June and it’s the highest-performance Aston Martin on the market today.
A competitor for the Ferrari 812 Superfast, the Aston Martin DBS Superleggera packs a real punch. Based on the Aston Martin DB11’s turbocharged V12, it’s lighter, faster and sleeker than its forebearer.
Turbocharged 5.2-litre V12 engine
It’s more than a worthy successor for the Aston Martin Vanquish S and the DB name is steeped in Aston Martin history. The DBS nameplate was first used back in 1967 and was resurrected in 2007 for the then range-topping model.
Superleggera goes back even earlier and first appeared on the Aston Martin DB4 in 1959. Taken literally, Superleggera means ‘super light’. That first DB4 featured a special lightweight frame and the iconic Superleggera name has gone on to appear on the Aston Martin DB5 and DB6 models, too.
And it’s back with a vengeance. It’s taken the crown from the Aston Martin Vanquish S as Aston Martin’s top supercar and its back in more than just name. Aston Martin’s engineers have deliberately kept the weight down on the new Aston Martin DBS Superleggera, staying true to the principal of super light.
Less weight means more speed and better performance; this super toned, honed and refined supercar has more than enough to do justice to its historic moniker.
In the words of Marek Reichman, Aston Martin’s, Chief Creative Officer:
When you hear the name DBS Superleggera, you know what it is. It’s the definitive Aston Martin Super GT. It’s an icon, a statement and this one will be no different. We’ve pushed the boundaries of performance and design to give this car a distinct character and ensure it’s worthy of the heritage and weight that this name carries.”
