Following in the footsteps of the Cayenne, the new Porsche Macan shares its sibling's great looks and brilliant performance, but takes on a more city-friendly mid-sized SUV form.
In profile the Macan is a sleek and stylish SUV, while from the front you could be forgiven for confusing it with a full-on sports car. The all-but-trademark Porsche grille and lights open proceedings in fine style. The bonnet swoops up over stylish Porsche designed alloys, which are available in anything up to 21-inch diameter. From the rear, the wheels are again notable, this time because of the additional width of the rear set. The split exhausts point to the car's substance and remind of its prowess as a sports car.
On the inside things remain impressive, with high-quality leather throughout and sporty, yet refined, body-hugging seats. The front seats can memorise your choice of 18 comfort settings and automatically adjust to your perfect position upon entry, which is ideal if two or more people regularly drive the car. The occupants are reminded of the car's racing lineage by the dynamic mixture of comfort and sport within the driving ergonomics. And for added ease when loading, the entire range is fitted with an electric tailgate.
The perfectly formed offspring of an SUV and a sports car, the Macan has one eye on efficiency, with combined figures of up to 46.3mpg from the S Diesel model and 32.5mpg from the S. Its other eye, however, is on performance. The top-of-the-range Turbo produces a mammoth 400hp and 550Nm of torque. This adds up to a 0-60mph time of under 4.8 seconds, putting it firmly within high-end sports car territory – but with space inside for five. Off-road the car shines equally well, handling obstacles with ease thanks to its Porsche Stability Management system and off-road mode.
Safety, as always with Porsche, is of paramount importance. And for that reason the car has a complete airbag curtain system, protecting all passengers in the event of an accident. Furthermore, ABS, stability management and an advanced braking system are present to aid the driver, second by second.
