Routes to go off-road in the South West with your tourer

Dust from the 2018 Dakar Rally may have settled, but if the ultimate test of rider and bike has left you longing for your own knobbly-tyre adventure, why not start here in the South West?

Our new BMW Adventure bikes aren’t just aggressive to look at, these machines are hungry for terrain that allows you to push your boundaries as they soak up every challenge.

Fortunately, England and Wales boast 6,000 miles of Byways Open to All Traffic (BOATs) or ‘green lanes’. Some of the best are within easy reach from our BMW Motorrad showroom at Cribbs Causeway, Bristol.

Below are our five favourite areas to experience adventure biking!

A windswept haven for adventure motorcyclists! Enjoy the whole day exploring the roads, stone tracks and unsurfaced chalk tracks of the Plain.

Mixed terrain will give the new BMW F 850 GS is the perfect opportunity to reveal its enduro character with its torque of 83 Nm at 5,750 rpm and Ride-by-Wire system that allows for precisely controlled, safe acceleration.

Wye Valley

A hot spot for green lanes, there are enough routes to suit riders of all abilities. From farm tracks and field edges, to more gnarly terrain, the winding Wye Valley offers rich pickings for the BMW adventure biker.

Cotswolds – Fosse Way

Thank the Romans for this wonderful stretch of easy-going green laning, stretching in a nice straight line south from Cotswold Airport. And if you want to keep on riding, let the road take you! The BMW R 1200 GS Adventure’s 125 HP engine, TFT Screen with high resolution satellite navigation and 30-litre fuel tank mean you’ve got the ultimate, reliable travel companion.

One of the closest places to Bristol where you can enjoy twisty, rough country lanes. Wrap up your day with coffee at Chew Valley Lake as you admire your BMW Adventure bike’s water-cooled twin-cylinder four-stroke engine against a picturesque backdrop.

Somerset Levels

The network of slender, raised country lanes that criss-cross the Levels may not be classified as BOATs but they are nevertheless fun to explore with their sharp corners and tiny hump-back bridges.

And don’t let wet weather put you off! BMW Adventure bikes provide safe, stable riding in all conditions with the R 1200 GS Adventure offering two standard riding modes, ‘Rain’ and ‘Road’ for enhanced traction.
