Futuristic concept car good looks, unbelievable mpg readings, stunning performance and cutting-edge aerodynamics all propel the BMW i8 into a sphere of its own.
Taking styling cues from the BMW M1, the i8 looks every inch the supercar. Wide and low, with visible aerodynamic elements, it looks like a car designed to slice right through the air with minimal effort. At the front the marque's famous grille sits proudly within the i Blue surround. To its flanks BMW's Black belt begins; swooping towards the ground. The Black belt also runs up and over the roof of the car and hugs the rear lights, making for a unique design. Wheels are muscular and big enough to impose flaring on the arches. But the real show-stoppers are the doors, as they are hinged to open diagonally up and forwards, creating an almost gull-wing look.
Inside things continue in impressive style. Step in over the i8 emblem and strip of naked carbon fibre, to find sporting bucket-style seats that hug both driver and passenger alike. The rear can take two further passengers, meaning a ride for the whole family. Driving position is paramount and dials and gauges cocoon the driver in perfect poise. The interior is clad in one of three colours of sustainably tanned leather and utilises recycled materials where possible. Premium optional extras include a bespoke Louis Vuitton luggage set.
Power is provided in somewhat unconventional form from a 1.5-litre three-cylinder petrol engine that generates an impressive 231hp and 320Nm of torque with the aid of its turbo. The relatively diminutive combustion engine is supported by BMW's eDrive system, which comprises a high-voltage lithium ion battery, an efficient electric engine and an ingenious energy management system. With both engines engaged top speed is a supercar-like 155mph with an astonishing 0-60mph of 4.4 seconds. Figures continue to impress with a combined fuel economy figure of 134.5mpg, putting a large green stamp on proceedings.
Safety is provided in the first instance by a carbon fibre passenger cell that serves to protect not only those enjoying the ride, but also the high-voltage lithium ion battery. A head-up display keeps the driver's eyes on the road and a hazard warning system alerts of any impending danger. All of this is, of course, complemented by a full array of airbags.
